Abstract

560,902. Stapling continuous filaments. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. Oct. 23, 1942, No. 10321. [Class 120 (iii)] Continuous filaments are broken into staple fibres and spun by a machine including feed rollers 13, 14 running at a low speed, breaking rollers 27, 28 running at a high speed, intermediate means for guiding and restraining the filaments while they are being broken and means for stretching the filaments before they are delivered to the feed rollers, such stretching means preferably comprising an additional pair of rollers 11, 12 having their nip at a distance of about one yard from the nip of the rollers 13, 14 and either driven at a surface speed a little below that of the rollers 13, 14 or subjected to a drag by a braking device. As shown, the intermediate means for guiding and restricting the filaments comprises a tube or channel 22, the filaments 21 from the tube passing to a travelling throat formed by a gap in the opposed surfaces of two geared rollers 23, 24 and thence to the breaking rollers 27, 28 ; a set of faller bars 25, two intercolating sets, or a pair of porcupine rollers may be disposed immediately behind the breaking rollers, the tube 22 may be open at the top to facilitate insertion of the filaments, the tube may be arched and it may be formed of two or more lengths linked together so that the degree of working may be varied. The gap between the rollers 23, 24 may be provided with pins. Specifications 352,535, 410,805, 417,325, 418,453 and 542,235 are referred to.
