Abstract

748,434. Spinning yarns. COURTAULDS, Ltd. Nov. 22, 1954 [Nov. 23, 1953], No. 32394/53. Class 120 (3). A travelling tow of mechanically crimped continuous and substantially parallel filaments is formed into a sheet of separated filaments prior to stapling by subjecting the tow to a tension sufficient to pull out the crimp without stretching the filaments as the tow is fed over one or more rotating members diverting the straight path of the tow between feeding and delivery devices and each comprising two or more filament bearing surfaces offset with respect to each other so that filaments bearing on one surface are teased away from filaments bearing on another surface. As shown, tow 1 is spread by passage in sinuous manner around fixed rods 3 and passes round a feed roller 4, whereat a liquid such as a lubricant may be applied by a wick 5 in a holder 6, around spinning members 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and circumferentially-ribbed delivery roller 12, over a fixed guide 13 to a staple fibre cutter (not shown). Each opening member comprises contiguous discs 14, ribbed edges of which constitute the filament bearing surfaces, housed between flanges 16 and mounted eccentrically on a shaft 15. The discs split the tow longitudinally into groups 18 of filaments and the ribs 17 thereon tend to subdivide the tow into minor groups 19 thereof. The number of discs and the number of ribs on each disc, and also the rotary speed of each member, increase progressively for each member 8, 9, 10 and 11. Thread guides may be mounted between the opening members to deflect the tow from a straight path therebetween, or one or more of such members may be replaced by guides.
