Abstract

Flat bands of parallel, continuous, manmade filaments are assembled into a tow in which the filaments are sufficiently intermingled to render the tow resistant to splitting along its length. Tensioned bands are passed side-by-side and in edge-to-edge contact through sets of feed and draw rolls between which the filaments are oriented by heating and stretching. All or most of the filaments are diverted from the straight path between the sets by engagement with a guide surface(s) having a V-shaped cross-section, as may be provided by a freely rotatable, double frustoconical reel. The amount of diversion decreases progressively from one edge of the tow towards the other or from both edges towards the centre so that the filaments are consolidated into a tow, or perhaps two separate tows formed one on each sloping face of the V surface. The thickness of the final tow varies across the width thereof. The one tow (or the two tows merged into a single tow which is readily splittable along one line only) is crimped in a stuffer-box and subsequently split and/or processed e.g. stapled, opened and spun into yarn or directly converted to spinnable sliver. The crimps in the filaments may be "deregistered" by passage of the tow between rollers the surface of one or both of which is formed with helical grooves and ridges and the resultant tow is opened and spread laterally by passage through a series of air spreaders to form a diaphanous but coherent web.
