Abstract

582,949. Stapling fibres. LOHRKE, J. L. May 19, 1944, No. 9709. Convention date, May 8, 1943. [Class 120 (iii)] A sliver of textile filaments is converted into a sliver of staple fibres by a method comprising continuously advancing the sliver longitudinally, continuously tensioning progressive portions of the sliver of length greater than that of the staple desired, and intermittently deflecting the tensioned sliver abrutly out of its path of movement to break progressively the tensioned filaments at the points of deflection without destroying the continuity of the sliver. The continuous sliver 2 from the can 9 is fed by feed rolls 11-14 through a beater 1 and spreading rolls 51-54 to fast moving fluted delivery rolls 18, 19, the roller 19 being provided with a leather belt 20 passing over an adjustable roller 21. Between the feed and delivery rolls is positioned a breaker device comprising two adjustable rollers 24, 25 provided with sharp flutes 27 which co-operate, without gripping the sliver, to deflect it and cause the fibres to break over the flutes 27. From the delivery rolls the stapled sliver enters a guide 32 and is thence fed by rollers 33, 34 to a crimping box 37, where it is folded back and forth, until its pressure builds up sufficiently to open a weighted flap 38 and allow it to move into a receiving can 10. U.S.A. Specification 1,883,384 is referred to.
