Abstract

431,984. Combined gilling and carding machines. ATELIERS ST.-ELOI, 18, Rue du Chateau, Tourcoing, and TAINE, R., 38, Rue St.-Henri, La Madeleine - lez - Lille, both in Nord, France. Oct. 3, 1934, No. 28362. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1933. [Class 120 (i)] In a combined gilling and carding machine the gilling unit comprises rows of needles or combs 30 mounted on pivoted bars 12, Fig. 1, which are given a rapid circular or rectilinear movement so as to produce a high operative speed, the operation being controlled so that the gill points 30 enter and leave the material in a substantially vertical direction. The material 2 is brought on a conveyer 1 to the pinned feed rollers 3 and is then treated by the gills 30 to produce a thin lap 2<1> which is passed by a brush 13 rotated slightly more quickly than the gill bars 12 to the saw tooth licker-in 4 from which the material is fed by a transfer roller 8 to the swift 7 having a co-operating fancy 9 and doffer 10. A bladed roller 6 is provided to detach burrs from the material on the licker-in 4. Workers 14 and strippers 15 may be provided on the swift 7 when dealing with very tangled materials. The bars 12 may be rotated by the differential mechanism described in Specification 430,694. When treating short fibres the bars 12 are driven at each end by discs 16, Figs. 2 and 3, keyed on the shaft 17, the end of each bar passing loosely through the disc 16 and having a crank 18 the pin 19 of which passes loosely through a ring 20 eccentric to the disc 16 and guided on rollers 21. Alternatively a disc may be used instead of the ring 20, or the ends of the bars 12 may be provided with bell cranks 18, 181 the crank pins 19, 19<1> of which are guided respectively in circular grooves 27, 27<1> formed in a fixed support 28, Fig. 6. For short curled wool a stripping roller 35, Fig. 10, may be added to facilitate the drawing action of the brush 13 while the pins 30 may be slightly inclined forwardly at entry and backwardly at exit from the fibres. For long fibres the bars 12 may be mounted on a chain 29 passing over pinions 31, Fig. 8, the needles 30 being maintained vertical by crank pins 19 engaging a chain 32 passing over pinions 33. In a modification for treating long fibres, a number of groups of needle bars A, A<1>, Fig. 9, moving at successively higher speeds, may be provided. A pinned roller 34 is substituted for the brush 13. To obtain a more intensive action intersecting gill units A, A<1> may be provided. If desired the wool may be fed damp to the conveyer 1 and heated by radiators or tubes within the conveyer, under the bars 12 or within the licker-in.
