916,860. Carding engines. REITERER, F., WINDISCH, L., and NIFENECKER, J. Sept. 29, 1961 [Nov. 2, 1960], No. 35206/61. Class 120 (1). Apparatus for detaching fibres from a hollow rotary cylinder, such as a carding engine doffer, having a perforated outer wall includes means within the cylinder directing an air blast outwardly through the perforate wall and fibre detaching rollers adjacent to the cylinder, one of the detaching rollers being hollow and perforated. In one form, Fig. 1, the air blast passes through a perforate detaching roller 6 to carry dust and short fibres into a hood 7 and the detachment of fibres from the card clothing 2 is assisted by a jet of air from a tube 9. A scraper 8 of rubber or the like engages the surface of the roller 6 to remove fibres that cling to it. Instead of a separate air jet from the tube 9, the air blast from the pressure duct 3 is in part deflected, as by a hood 12 and vane 14, Fig. 3, so as to have a component tangential to the card clothing. In Fig. 3, a hollow detaching roller 6 has imperforate rollers 5, 17 associated with it in such manner that the air blast from the duct 3 flowing through the roller 6 passes between the rollers 5, 17. By adjusting the distance between rollers 5, 17 the length of the short fibres removed from the web may be varied.
