872,288. Removing trash from carding engines. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 15, 1958 [June 11, 1957], No. 18455/57. Class 120(3) Trash 14 from the main cylinder, taker-in and doffer of a carding engine to be evacuated from the housing enclosing the underside of the machine is carried on a mechanical conveyer 8 at uniform speed to an air outlet slot 18 outside which an external air stream is subjected to a change of momentum and has a velocity such as to entrain the trash at the outlet. The air stream, which is induced by a fan 26, is drawn through openings 23 in the housing into a duct 12; in passing outlet 18 on the way from one duct compartment 20 to another 21, the air stream is substantially reversed. The trash-laden air then passes through a pipe 24, is cleaned by a filter 34, and passes up a riser 30 whence it is directed by a damper 36 either through a duct 33 into the outside atmosphere or through a duct filter 37 and a duct 32 to the card-room atmosphere. Outlet 18 is located at the taker-in end of the housing. In a modification, a vertical partition divides the housing beneath the take-in from that beneath the main cylinder and doffer. An additional extract duct, generally similar to duct 12, is located at the bottom of the partition to extract the trash from the cylinder and doffer separately from that from the taker-in, air being supplied to and removed from the further duct by slotted pipes extending into the duct from each side of the housing.
