Abstract

727,147. Removal of dust generated in industrial processes. BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 16, 1953 [March 18, 1952], No. 6961/52. Class 8 (2). Dust-laden air in the vicinity of that portion of the periphery of, a grinding wheel 1, Fig. 1, projecting from a cowl 2 is induced by a fast moving low volume air screen located between said wheel portion and the breathing zone of the operator into an exhaust system adjacent said cowled wheel but having the low pressure side of the air flow generator (not shown) isolated from the cowl 2. Horizontal suction nozzles 14, 15 and angularly adjustable vertical suction nozzles 10, 11 exhaust into branch ducts 12, 13, 21 and 22 of a suction duct 7 and a hopper 5 below work rest 6 discharges into a suction duct 4. A collecting box 3 into which the base of the cowl 2 opens may also be provided with suction. In a modification horizontal air screens are induced through oppositely facing nozzles above the wheel and located in two arms of a triangular breast piece. In a further modification wherein the major portion of each of a plurality of wheels 31, Fig. 3, is located within a common exhaust chamber 34 the horizontal screen for each wheel is induced through a nozzle 41 at the outer end of a duct 39 housing a suction fan 40 which discharges towards the periphery of its associated wheel within the chamber.
