Abstract

659,088. Opening fibres; lap-forming apparatus. WEST POINT MANUFACTURING CO. July 29, 1948, No. 20232. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1947. [Class 120(i)] [Also in Group VIII] A machine for manufacturing unwoven fabrics comprises a device supplying fibres to a fibre transfer duct traversed by an air current which carries the fibres to a foraminous member on which they are deposited by the current to form a matted web, the fibre supply device having a velocity ratio of at least 500 between the feed-in speed of the fibres to the device and their speed of delivery by the device to the transfer duct, the supply device having a high speed supply surface substantially normal to the axis of the duct which has a side air inlet arranged to direct the entering air transversely to the inlet end of the duct. As shown, fibre is fed from a lap 11 by a take-in 16 to a card cylinder 17 from which it is removed by a high-speed doffer 20 rotating at a peripheral speed 500 to 1,500 times that of the taker-in. The fibre is removed from doffer 20 by an air stream passing through an inlet 26 transversely into a duct 25 which is of uniform crosssection and has transparent inspection panels 31, inlet 26 being provided with a screw-adjustable gate 27 for regulating the strength of the air stream. The fibres are deposited on a cylindrical screen 33 rotating in a casing 32 and provided with a stationary internal shield 42. The air stream passes through an opening 43 in shield 42 and out through exhaust connections 44, at the ends of casing 32, leading to a fan 46. Flexible sealing strips 47 and a sealing roller 48 are provided at the end of duct 25, and flexible seals are also provided at the ends of the screen 33, casing 32 and shield 42. The speed of rotation of screen 33 is variable to control the thickness of the fibre web deposited thereon. The width of the web may be varied up to the full width of the screen by using ducts with outlets of different widths; it may be formed in a narrow width, being stripped from screen 33 by a doffing roll and collected in a sliver can. Alternatively, the web may, as shown, be stripped from screen 33 by a flexible, porous belt 63 of cloth, woven wire or the like and subjected to a bonding treatment (see Group VIII).
