Abstract

714,640. Carding-engines; cleaning textile spinning &c. machines; stop-motions acting on lap irregularities. BETTONI, E. April 16, 1952, No. 9612/52. Classes 120(1), 120(2) and 120(3) A revolving-flat card for cotton or like fibres comprises revolving flats which extend over about threequarters of the outside surface of the main cylinder, a swinging comb adapted to travel tangentially over the outside surface of the doffer, a system of levers and rods which, when operated by the movement of a guide roller caused by passage of a knot thereunder, actuates a clutch to stop the feed roller, a set of movable counterweights which can be displaced independently of each other to allow knots or like irregularities to pass therethrough, and a dust exhaust fan acting also as a separator of short fibres and card wastes. In the operation of the apparatus shown, a lap laid on a grooved roller 56 is passed to guide rollers 67, 68 and feed roller 69, to the taker-in 46 and thence to the main cylinder 2, carded material fed to the doffer 75 being combed by a swinging comb 82, fed to the grooved calender roll 88, and passed in the form of a sliver to a calender roll 92 and collected in a can 45: short fibres or wastes discharged from the carding flats and conveyed by stripping rollers 19, 20 are drawn into a revolving perforated tube 109 and converted into a lap and wound around a rod 112 forming part of the exhaust system, and dust is extracted from the fibres by means of a fan 103 operating in combination with a fixed tube 108 concentric to the tube 109, duct 107, tube 105, and fabric filling sleeve 106, Figs. 2 and 3. A motor 98 drives by a belt 99 the main cylinder 2 and consequently (through means not shown) all the revolving elements of the machine, through a pulleyclutch unit 100. The revolving flats 4 and 5 are driven from the taker-in 46 through .a belt 48 through a reduction gear comprising spur wheels 30, 31, 32, bevel pinions 36, 35, shaft 29, a train of gears 28, 27, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, Cardan drive 21, bevel gears 11, 12, shaft 13, worms and wheels 10, 8, and 9, 6 and 7: stripping rollers 19, 20 are driven from a shaft 3 through bevel pinions 14 and 15, and through sprockets 16, 17 and chain 18 from shaft 13. The drive originating from the taker-in 46 is also transmitted through worm 34, worm wheel 34<SP>1</SP>, shaft 40 carrying a manually or automatically controlled clutch 41, and to a Cardan shaft 42 which controls a plate 44 on which the cam 45 is supported; also, through the clutch 41, a shaft 49 transmits the drive through gears 50, 51, 52 to shaft 53 which in turn drives through skew gears 54, 55, to the lap roller 56 and by means of skew gears 57, 58, a shaft 59 whereby power is transmitted to guide rollers 67, 68, and feed rollers 69, through gears 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, and 66. An. extension of shaft 49 drives through bevel gears 70, 71, a shaft 72, gears 73, 74, to the doffer 75, through gears 76, 77, .78, 79, 80, an eccentrically mounted swinging arm 81 carrying the comb 82, through skew gears 84, 85, shaft 89 and gears 90, 91, the sliverforming roll 88, and through pinions 86, 87, 93, 94 and gears 95, 96, to a calender roll 92. When a knot or irregularity occurs in a lap passing between rollers 67 and 68, Fig. 5, the latter is lifted, and, through a system of levers 121, 125, and rods 124, 127, operates the clutch 41 so that the shaft 49 is disengaged from the shaft 40 to stop the feed and guide rollers, doffer, comb, calenders 88 and 92, and roller 56 until the fault is cleared, whereupon the roller 68 lowers and automatically throws in the clutch 41. If the knots are allowed to pass between rollers '67, 68, then one of the pivotally and adjustably mounted feed counterweights, as at 131, is lowered to permit the lap to pass under and beyond the roller 69: if several lap irregularities lock between rollers 69 and the counterweights, they halt the lap feed, and the driving shaft is then disengaged by throwing out manually a ballengagement clutch 120 until the irregularities have been removed.
