Abstract

632,226. Opening and cleaning cotton &c. BURESH, F. M. April 14, 1947, No. 9906. Convention date, May 1, 1946. [Class 120 (i)] In the formation of a fibre web in which fibres are picked from fibrous material by a toothed rotor and are then carried from the rotor by an air stream to a rotary foraminous drum on which they are deposited, the rotor is rotated at high speed, the air stream is directed tangentially off the rotor so that the fibres are doffed from the rotor by centrifugal force and the velocity of the air stream, and the air stream passes diametrically through the drum as the drum rotates. As shown, a lap 11 of fibres, e.g. cotton, is fed over a support 10 by a feed roll 15 to a rotor 12 provided with saw-teeth 13. The lower part of drum 12 projects into a suction duct 32, the maximum speed of the air stream being slightly higher than the surface speed of the drum. The fibre doffed from drum 12 is carried 'by the air stream to the surface of a wire mesh drum 24. The air stream, carrying dirt, &c. from the fibres passes through a passage 34 within the drum to a discharge duct 38 leading to a suction fan 33 and a discharge outlet 37. The fibres adhere to drum 24 in the form of a web which is pressed thereon by a pressure roll 30 and carried around by the drum to be discharged on an endless conveyer 27.
