Abstract

1395925 Spreading filamentary tow INSTITUT TEXTILE DE FRANCE 26 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 34924/72 Heading D1F In the conversion of a tow of continuous filaments into a spread band thereof, a running tow is stretched by two pairs of draft rollers between which is interposed a rotary vibrator. Curved surfaces of sectional members of the vibrator engage the filaments successively to impart additional tensions thereto in the form of vibrations the majority of which have an inclined transverse resultant with respect to the plane passing through the nips of the rollers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, tow 1 passes from a drum 2, through tensioning bars 3 and 4 and back rollers 5, over a positively driven vibrator 6 and through front rollers 7 near the exit of which the spread band 1a subjected to the further spreading action of divergent jets of gaseous fluid emerging through an aperture 8 of a pneumatic device 9 and is carried by the gaseous sheet or curtain flowing over and along a guide plate 10 at the downstream end of which the band is taken-up by a conveyor belt (not shown). The vibrator 6 may comprise one or more curvilinear faced members constituted by plane or straight blades 21 or rigid steel wires on a support 23, Figs. 3-6 (not shown). Two superposed tows, perhaps of chemically different filaments, may be simultaneously spread. Additional rotary vibrators may be used in successive zones downstream of rollers 7, positioned above or below the level of the vibrator 6 shown. The vibrator members may be similar or different as regards material or shape e.g. the curved edges may undulate and the undulations of successively operating members may be in line or staggered, Figs. 9-11 (not shown). Blade members may comprise flaps or deflectors which create swirling air currents acting on the filaments and/or pressure fluid may be supplied from a hollow axial bore of the vibrator to emerge at the outlets of radial channels.
