Abstract

205,576. Spiess, G. July 20, 1922. Feeding webs.-Relates to web-feeding apparatus for cutting-machines of the kind wherein continuously rotating feed members are mounted on a carriage which, at a certain moment, is moved in a direction opposite to that of the feed so as to produce a temporary stoppage in that part of the web which has passed the feed members and consists in mounting and nc ú uating the feed members so that they serve to draw the web continuously from the reel and at the same time take up the excess web due to the temporary stoppage of the web during the cutting operation. In one form, Fig. 3, the web 4 is drawn from a reel 2 and fed to a cutter 18 by a pair of feed bands or rollers 1 driven by a belt 5 passing round a continuously driven pulley 6, guide rollers 7 and tension pulley 8. The bands 1 and pulley 8 are mounted on slidable carriages 9, 10 connected by links 11 and reciprocated by a lever 20 and rod 19 operated by a cam 17 on a shaft 15 driven by gearing 13, 14 from the shaft 6. The shaft 15 also carries a cam 16 for actuating the knife 18 and the cams 16, 17 are constructed and arranged so that approximately at the time the knife 18 is lowered, the carriages 9, 10 are moved in a direction opposite to the feed at half the normal feed speed so that the part of the web between the feed bands 1 and the cutter is brought to rest while the bands continue to draw the web from the reel at a uniform speed. If desired, instead of bringing the web to rest, its speed could be retarded or its direction of movement reversed by suitably adjusting the speed of the belt 5 and the carriages 9 and 10. Instead of mounting the web feed rollers upon a sliding carriage they may be mounted on an arm pivoted to the frame at a point above or below the rollers and the arm may swing from one side of the vertical to the other or to one side only. The carriage 10 may also be replaced by a pivoted arm. Fig. 7 shows a construction for use when the web is required to pass in a substantially straight path from the reel to the cutter. The feed rollers 1 are carried by a pivoted arm 21 and are driven by a gear 24 on the pivot of the arm and an intermediate gear 25. As the arm is moved away from the cutter 18 by the cam 17 and rod 19, a loop is formed in the web causing a retardation of the web between the rollers 1 and cutter 18 and when the web is thus retarded a pressing bar 28 is depressed to engage the web and hold it at rest during the operation of the cutter 18. During this movement of the arm 21 the speed of the rollers 1 increases and the movement and velocity of the arm are so adjusted that the increase of speed causes the web to be drawn uniformly from the reel 2.
