Abstract

640,757. Angular bending. ARMCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. June 30, 1948, No. 17668. [Class 83 (iv)] Apparatus for bending tubes, rods or the like comprises an oscillatory member, a pair of bending members mounted on the oscillatory member and between which the work is advanced into position for bending and means for oscillating the member to form a succession of reverse bends in the work. The apparatus comprises a table 10 with the bending mechanism at the centre and a radial slot 85 housing a guide tube 84 through which the work is fed from roller feed mechanism 12. The feed mechanism comprises chaindriven intergeared rolls of rubber or like material and the upper roll may be moved to or from the lower roll by a compressed air cylinder 73 and a link 75. Bolted to the frame of the feed mechanism is an oscillating bar 80 to which the guide tube is secured and which extends up to an enlargement 86 of the slot 85 at the centre of the table where the end of the bar is shaped as shown in Figs. 9, 11 and 15 with two notches 87 and 88. The bending mechanism comprises two grooved rolls 20, 21, mounted on studs 19 upstanding from a head 18 at the end of a vertical shaft 17. The shaft is oscillated by a gear 23 engaging a rack 24 movable by compressed air cylinders 28, 29 between limits determined by stops 36 and 37 simultaneously adjustable towards or away from each other by a screw 38. Beneath the rolls 20, 21 the studs have enlarged portions 20a, 21a adapted to engage in the notches 87, 88 at the end of the bar 80 which is urged forwards by a spring 90 into a position determined by a stop 96. In operation, the work T is fed forward to a stop 115 and then gripped by a clamp 100 beyond the end of the guide tube and operated by a compressed air cylinder 110. The head 18 is then turned from the position of Fig. 9 to the position of Fig. 11, the stud enlargement 21a entering the notch 87 of the bar 80 which swings as shown while the roll 20 bends the work about the roll 21. The head 18 is turned back to its normal position, the work again advanced to the stop 115 and the head then turned in the reverse direction to form the second bend as shown in Fig. 15. In order to accommodate the lateral and longitudinal movements of the bar 80, the feeding mechanism is carried by a frame 51 having rocker elements 53 with arcuate ends underlying guides 52 carried by the main support 50.
