Abstract

903,104. Foil-cutting machines. CHISWICK PRODUCTS Ltd. Nov. 25, 1959, No. 40041/59. Class 31(1). [Also in Groups XV II and XXX]. A foil-cutting machine for producing pieces of foil of desired shape for application to containers (see Group XVII) comprises a cutter movable at right angles to the plane of the foil to be cut and having pointed teeth to define a continuous cutting edge around the cutter, gripping means for maintaining the foil taut and stationary over a portion of its length during a cutting operation and a carriage mounted for reciprocating movement transversely of the movement of the cutter and serving to advance a continuous strip of foil intermittently through the machine, which carriage has at least one pair of co-operable clamps between which in operation the strip of foil is disposed, the clamps serving, as the carriage moves in one direction, to advance the strip of foil through the machine, and in the other direction, to release the foil. As shown in Figs. 2a and 2b, the carriage 27 has two pairs of clamps 28, 29 between which a strip 25 of foil is disposed. The gripping means comprises plates 34, 35 and two pairs of holding clamps 37, 38 so that as the cutter 32 and an associated frame 36 are moved towards the foil, the latter is gripped between the plates 34, 35 and the clamps 37, 38. The cutter pushes the cut foil through an aperture 40 in the plate 35. The carriage 27 has a supply roll 94, Fig. 5, of foil mounted therein. The movable parts of the clamps 28, 29 are each secured to a pivotal shaft 85 or 86, each being rotatable by a lever 87 or 88, the levers being interconnected by a link 90 including a spring 92 so that both pairs of clamps operate simultaneously. The carriage 27 is reciprocable by means of a pivotallymounted arm 105, Fig. 3a, oscillatable by means of a cam 106 mounted on the main driveshaft 55. The cutter is secured to a pivotallymounted lever 48, Fig. 3a, the free end of which is connected to linkage 52 which is operable by a cam 54 on the shaft 55. After the cut strip of foil leaves the cutter, it passes over a continuously rotated sponge plastic roller which maintains a small amount of tension in the cut foil.
