Abstract

1309428 Tape applicator TAPELER CORP 23 July 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 35778/70 Heading B8F An adhesive tape applicator comprises a reciprocable carriage 23 having a rectanglar tape feeding drum 43 rotatably mounted thereon. The comers of the drum form linear cutting edges and pins 61 project through the faces to hold the tape 59 thereon. A pair of interconnected pawls 50 are pivoted at 52 to a member 48 secured to a support 26, and one spring urged anticlockwise. A pin 44 extends axially from each corner of the drum 43. On downward movement of the carriage 23 the lower face of the drum applies the piece of tape thereon to an article (not shown) supported on resilient pad 24, and the pawls override the top left hand pin 44. When the carriage returns the forked ends 54 of the pawls engage the top left hand pin 44 and rotate the drum 43 anticlockwise through 90 degrees. During the rotation an edge of the drum co-operates with roller 47, resiliently mounted on the carriage, to sever the tape portion to be applied on the next downward motion. The spindle 40 on which the drum is pivoted is so profiled at 62 that the downward pointing pin 61 may be pushed in as the tape is applied to the surface. A spring pressed latch 56 prevents reverse rotation of the drum. The carriage 23 is mounted at the lower end of a rod 31 reciprocable within a pneumatic cylinder 27. The cylinder is secured to the support 20 by bolts 29 and slots 30 allow adjustment of the assembly so as to be vertical and may also allow adjustment of the height of the cylinder above pad 24. The upward stroke of the rod 31 is limited by a stop 38 abutting the lower end of the cylinder while the downward stroke may be adjusted by an adjustable stop 32 abutting against the cylinder. A plate 35 is secured to the top of the rod and has nylon studs in its rear face to bear on the support 20 and prevent rotation of the rod. The tape is trained from a roll on a hub 57, over a roll 60 on the support to a roll 36 mounted on the plate 35 and thence to a roll 45 on the carriage. Spring pressed plates 81 secured to the carriage ensure that an article is not picked up by the carriage after application of a piece of tape. The pneumatic operating system may be double acting (as shown in Fig. 1) and may comprise a four-way valve 87, blow control units 91 and pressure regulator 92. The units 91 control the rate of travel of the rod 31, while the regulator 92 controls the force with which the tape is applied. Alternatively a spring control acts in one direction and return could be by electrical or pneumatic means. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) the applicator is adjustably secured to an upright rod and the work to which the tape is applied is carried past the carriage by a conveyer, the plate 21 and cushion 24 being omitted. Where large tape rolls are used a friction roller 68 may be held in contact with the periphery of the roll by means of spring-loaded arm 64. The arm is behind the plate 20 and the roller projects through arcuate slot 66. Stops 71 may be placed in holes 70. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 the arm is loaded by a weight instead of a spring. Specifications 1,309,429 and 1,309,430 are referred to wherein means for taking up slack tape upon return of the carriage and means for stripping an interliner from the tape are respectively described. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,118,370.
