Abstract
672,952. Coating webs. ARNOLD, J. C. (Pneumatic Scale Corporation, Ltd.). July 29, 1949, No. 19948/49. Class 140. An apparatus for applying an adhesive coating to a moving paper web comprises an adhesive applying roller rotating in an opposite direction to the travel of the web, means to press the web intermittently against the applicator roller, and means to move the pressing means a short distance in the direction of travel of the web during the period of contact between the web and the applicator roller. The apparatus may form part of a packaging machine and there may be associated several applicator rollers each. provided with means to cause intermittent contact between the roller and the web. In a packaging machine, Fig. 3, applicator rollers 90 and 92 and a pair of feed rollers 38, 40 are driven in timed relation with the packaging operation. The web 12 is drawn from a reel 36, Fig. 1, and over rollers 58, 80 and 84. The rollers 80 and 84 are urged into contact with the applicator rollers 90 and 92 by springs 126 and 150 respectively. Contact between rollers 80 and 90 is prevented, except at its low points 132, 134 by a cam 128 mounted upon the shaft 106 of roller 90, so that in the coating operation stripes 26, 28 are applied. To restrict the width of these stripes the roller 80 may be moved in the direction of the web during the period of contact, by a mechanism, Fig. 5, in which the roller 80 is mounted upon an arm 172 carried upon a bell-crank 174 which also carries a follower 180 co-operating with a cam 182 driven in timed relation with the roller 90. The roller 92 applies an edge stripe 22 of adhesive interrupted at intervals by the action of a high point 156 upon cam 152. As illustrated in Fig. 4 the stripes 26, 28 can be applied by separate apparatus 160, 162 and the stripe 22 by an apparatus 164. The web is tensioned by a roller 58 carried by a bell-crank 60 urged in a clockwise direction by a weak spring 66. The anticlockwise motion of the bell-crank is limited by a slider 75, Fig. 1, carried by the bell-crank sliding upon an arm 73 contacting a spring 77 abutting an adjustable stop 79. The roller 58 is arranged to unwind the web 12 continuously and for this purpose the rod 73 is reciprocated by a cam mechanism 63, 67, 69 in timed relation with the other operations which include cutting the web at 42 and performing the packaging operation at 16.
