Description
ADHESIVE APPLYING APPARATUS AND METHOD
This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for use in joining together two webs of flexible sheet material.
The invention provides apparatus for use in joining together two webs of flexible sheet material, comprising means for rotatably mounting at least one applicator wheel, means for drawing one of the webs past the applicator wheel in a direction at right angles to the axis of rotation of the applicator wheel and with a surface of the said one web in operative contact with the outer rim of the applicator wheel, means for supplying the applicator wheel with adhesive whereby to enable adhesive to be applied to the said surface of the said one web via the outer rim, in use, and means being provided for driving the applicator wheel to rotate synchronously with the rate of drawing the said one web.
The invention also provides a method of joining together two webs of flexible sheet material, comprising the steps of providing at least one applicator wheel and means for rotatably mounting the applicator wheel, drawing one of the webs past the applicator wheel in a direction at right angles to the axis of rotation of the applicator wheel and with a surface of the said one web in operative contact with the otter rim of the applicator wheel, supplying the applicator wheel with adhesive whereby to enable adhesive to be applied to the said surface of the said one web via the outer rim, and bringing together the two webs after the adhesive has been applied so that the two webs are joined together by the adhesive, and including providing means for driving the applicator wheel to rotate synchronously with the rate of drawing the said one web.
Preferably, adhesive is supplied to the applicator wheel from a reservoir via a transfer roller.
Preferably, the said one web is trained about a roller at the point where adhesive is applied to its said one surface, and the roller is preferably driven to rotate synchronously with the applicator wheel.
The invention further provides an end product obtained using the apparatus or method defined herein and in particular, an end product comprising one transparent web and one translucent web.
By way of example, an embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view showing apparatus according to the invention,
Figure 2 is an end view showing a detail of the transfer roller,
Figure 3 is an end view showing a detail of the applicator roll assembly, and
Figure 4 is an end view showing a detail of the drive roll.
The apparatus seen in Figure 1 is for joining together two webs of flexible sheet material. The apparatus has a frame 10 having two axles 11, 12 on which can be mounted two rolls carrying the two webs 13, 14 that are to be joined together. An adjustable clutch mechanism is provided to enable the tension in each web 13, 14 to be adjusted and there is means provided for lateral guidance and adjustment for each web. Here, one of the two webs is transparent (a clear tri-acetate material) and the other is translucent (a matt pol tri-acetate material).
Mounted on the frame 10 is a tray 15 containing a reservoir of liquid ahdesive. The adhesive used here is 2-methoxyethanol. Adhesive is picked up from the tray 15 by a driven transfer roller 16. As seen in Figure 2, synchronised drive to the transfer roller 16 is delivered through spur gear 17. The transfer roller 16 has an outer surface of plastics material 18. The position of the transfer roller 16 is adjustable to enable the amount of adhesive which it picks up from the tray 15 to be controlled.
Adhesive is applied to a surface of one of the webs 13 via a driven applicator roll assembly 19. As seen in Figure 3, the applicator roll assembly 19 comprises a shaft 20 to which synchronised drive is delivered by spur gear 21. Applicator wheels 22 can be mounted firmly on the shaft 20, and the mumber and position of the applicator wheels on the shaft is adjustable. Each applicator wheel 22 has an outer rim 23 which is serrated and which is in operative contact with the transfer roller 16 and the surface of the upper web 13.
At the point where adhesive is applied to the upper web 13 by the applicator wheels 22, the upper web -is trained about a driven roller 24. The arrangement of the driven roller 24 is similar to that of the transfer roller 16, as seen in Figure 2 except that it does not have the plastics material covering. Means is provided for adjusting the relative position of the driven roller 24 and the applicator wheels 22 so as to enable control of the adhesive which is applied to the surface of the web 13.
After application of the adhesive, the two webs 13, 14 coverage and come into contact with each other at an idler roll 25 from where the resulting joined web W passes through a pair of driven pinch rollers 26, 27. The arrangement of the upper pinch roller 26 is similar to that of the driven roller 24. The arrangement of the lower pinch roller 27, which is the drive roll, is seen in Figure 4. Synchronised drive is delivered to the lower pinch roller 27 via belt pulley 28 and drive is linked to the other rollers via spur gear 29. The separation betwen the pinch rollers 26, 27 is adjustable. The joined web W is wound onto a storage reel 30.
It will be appreciated that the apparatus can be used to produce various different end products.
Typically, the end product may comprise simply two plain webs with a glue line at each edge, forming what is effectively a flat "tube". However, the webs may be sectioned off cross-wise by a plurality of glue lines to form adjacent pockets or flat tubes across the web. Such end products as these using one transparent and one translucent web are particularly suitable for use in containing photographic film, eg, negatives, where the translucent web helps to produce diffuse back lighting which facilitates viewing of the film.
