Abstract

437,881. Securing adhesive strips. JAGENBERG - WERKE AKT. - GES., 107, Himmelgeisterstrasse, D³sseldorf, Germany. June 4, 1935, No. 16133. Convention date, June 5, 1934. [Class 73] [See also Group XVII] Relates to the manufacture of adhesive parcel carriers of the kind comprising a length of gummed strip K, Fig. 11, having attached to the gummed surface a carrier band T, portions of which are pushed through slits L, S in the strip to form carrying loops R. Reinforcing pieces V are applied to the gummed surface of the strip and slits Q are cut in both band and strip to enable individual lengths to be readily detached as required for use. The gummed strip is drawn from a reel 1 over rollers 2 to 7 by means of a driven grooved roller J. In its passage between rollers 4 and 5, where the apertures L are formed by a punching device G and the reinforcing strips V are applied by a device H, both devices operating intermittently, the strip is fed stepwise by the rollers 4, 5 being mounted on arms 8, 9, the movement of which is controlled by a revolving cam 11. In passing over roller J the parts of the strip between the broad ends of the apertures L are moistened by contact with the wick of a reciprocating moistening device N, and subsequent to this the slits S are cut by an oscillating knife M co-operating with the groove in the roller. From roller J the strip passes to a rotating drum P formed with recesses a, b, c, where it meets the band T drawn from a reel 16 and guided to pass between a roller 21 driven at a higher speed than the drum and a roller 22 carried by one arm of a forked lever 23, the other arm of which carries a roller 25 in contact with a cam 26, Fig. 5, on the drum so causing roller 22 to be alternately in and out of contact with the driven roller 21. By this means the band is laid into the recesses of the drum forming the loop portions R, the intervening parts being caused to adhere to the strip by the pressure of the resiliently mounted rollers 38, 39. From the drum the united strip and band pass over a roller 27 and between guide rails 28-31, Fig. 8, where the teeth of a wheel Z force the loops through the slits to the ungummed side of the strip. On its passage to the winding drum 37 the transverse slots are formed by a punching device W arranged to travel for a short distance along with the strip. In a modified construction the drum P and guide rails are replaced by a drum 40, Fig. 13, and an oscillating guide channel 41 for the band T which channel in the extreme right-hand position projects slightly into the recesses e, f, g. Adjacent to the channel are rollers 43, 44 driven at speeds respectively greater than and equal to the peripheral speed of the drum and the gummed strip K. The arrangement is such that when a slit part of the band is approaching a recess e the channel is swung inwardly to open the slit, Fig. 14 ; the band is then in contact with roller 43 through a slot in the channel and being fed at a higher speed than the strip forms a loop R. Between the loops the channel moves backwards bringing the band into contact with the more slowly moving roller 44 so that the intermediate parts are fed forward at the same rate as the strip and are caused to adhere to the moistened parts thereof.
