1464574 Securing web ends to rolls WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 8 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 20288/74 Heading B8R The free ends of successively delivered rolls of paper or plastics material are secured to the rolls by application of cut lengths of adhesive tape which exceed the circumference of a roll. In the operation of the apparatus shown, the rolls 2 formed by winding apparatus (not shown) are moved singly on endless belts 5, 6 and 7 of a conveyer 1 to a taping station 3 with the loose end 45 of the roll leading. The roll 2 is thrown by way of roll 8 into a gap between continuously rotating rolls 9 and 10 and is rotated thereby so that the end 45 is wound on to its roll. An endless conveyer 41 (in the form of a coil of spring wire) is then set in motion by motor 39 driving roll 38 to move adhesive tape 30 from a supply roll 28 around rollers 37 and 32, across a table 33 and into the gap between roll 2 and supporting roll 9 whereupon a required length of tape is detached by a cutter blade 35 (secured to a pivotable carrier 34 and actuated by pneumatic piston-and-cylinder device 36) and the advance of tape 30 is halted. When the cut length of tape has been wound around, and pressed against, roll 2 by a full revolution thereof, the roll 10 is swung into position 10<SP>1</SP> so that the gap between rolls 9 and 10 widens sufficiently to allow roll 2 to fall therethrough on to a removal shoot. A reserve roll of tape, as at 28, in a holder, as at 29, (not shown) may be available so that its leading end may be gummed to the end of roll 28 about to be depleted. Rolls 9 and 10 are driven from a motor 13 through pulley 11, belt 12, adjustably tensioned by device 14, and belt or chain 21, tensioned by spring- loaded roller 22. Roll 10 is moved to and from position 10<SP>1</SP> by pneumatic piston-and-cylinder device 27 acting through levers 26 and 29, mounted on a shaft 18. The sequence of operations, initiated by a travelling roll 2 engaging the contact arm 46 of a switch, is electrically controlled, in accordance with the frequency of travel of rolls 2 on conveyer 1, by a system including pre-set, time-delay relays, Fig. 3 (not shown).
