Abstract

1369299 Splicing webs BAYERISCHE BERG - HUTTEN - UND SALZWERKE AG 15 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 27922/72 Heading B8R In a method of and apparatus for splicing an end portion of a new web from a new roll to an expiring moving web, the webs being fed through tension control means in web loops of varying lengths are provided, the end portion is firstly attached to a transfer element, the transfer element and expiring web are brought together, the element is accelerated to the speed of the expiring web, and the end portion secured to the expiring web and detached from the transfer element the new roll being accelerated up to speed only after splicing. The expiring web 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> is unwound from a roll 4. The end portion 16<SP>1</SP> of the new web 16 is adhered to the periphery of a transfer roller 17 by means of an adhesive strip 18 coated on both sides, and moved towards the running web 6. When the roller 17 contacts the expiring web 6 it rotates up to the web feed speed and when the adhesive strip contacts the expiring web 6 it attaches the new web 16 thereto and detaches itself from the roller. During this time a loop 16<SP>11</SP> in the new web 16 is expanded and subsequent tension in the joined webs, whilst new web roll 5 is accelerating to web feed speed, is taken up by movement of a tension roller 11 connected to a spring 13 and weight 15. The expiring web is cut by a blade 19 after the joining operation. When the web 16 from roll 5 has nearly expired a new web is attached to roller 8 in a retracted position, the roller then being moved towards the web 16. After this joining operation blade 20 cuts the web 16. A pressure sensitive switch and time relay may control operation of the transfer rollers. Brakes on the web roll spindles tension the running webs. In alternative embodiments, the transfer roller is held stationary whilst the expiring web is moved towards it by a pneumatically or hydraulically driven guide roller, or both the expiring web and the transfer roller are moved. The web rolls may be held on a rotatable turret. When web tension returns to normal, the tension roller 11 is moved to its normal position by a motor. The cutting blade may have tri-angular teeth operated by a solenoid. The transfer roller, which may be driven so that contact with the running web is unnecessary, may be replaced by a belt, the tension spring 13 by a pneumatic or hydraulic motor, and the adhesive strip by an adhesive coating.
