Abstract

1417972 Splicing webs P HURST 4 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 56634/71 Heading B8R Web splicing apparatus comprises means for bringing an adhesive coated portion of a first web 8 into surface contact with a second web 12 and constraining the joined webs to follow a sinuous path to ensure their intimate contact. The webs pass between parallel rollers 3, 4 on a rotatable carrier 5, the first web 8 being held by tensioning means 7, e.g. a pair of spring biased flexible tapes temporarily stuck to the leading end, whilst the second web is being fed to a printing machine. Near expiry, the web 8 is coated with adhesive, e.g. double-sided adhesive tape, and the carrier rotated through 180 degrees thereby splicing the webs and pulling the web 8 from the tensioning tapes. The joined webs then follow a sinuous path through the rollers 3, 4 until the carrier is returned. The expiring web 12 is severed before or after carrier return. The carrier is rotated by a rack and pinion driven by a pneumatic ram. A plurality of web reels 1, 2 may be held in a reel stand serving a plurality of printing machines.
