Abstract
1416506 Web splicing CHAMBON Ltd 11 Sept 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 42688/73 Heading B8R A web splicing device in a web unwinding machine comprising a stand 1, Fig. 1, supporting rotatably a support 3 carrying at its end a pair of mandrels 5, 6 for replacement and expiring web rolls A, B includes a rotary knife blade cylinder 13, driven by a motor 14 and connectable selectively by a kinematic connection drive to the replaceable web roll, and brake means 29, 30 Fig. 2, to brake the mandrel of the expiring web roll during unwinding thereof. In operation the unwound web roll A has its mandrel 5 subjected to a braking torque to maintain the tension in the web 7. Braking torque is applied to the mandrel by a brake 29 acting on a chain sprocket 25 connected with the mandrel by chain drive 31, 33. During rewinding of the expiring web roll A the replacement web roll B is prepared for splicing by disposing the adhesive tape 8 on the leading edge of the web of roll A against a mark and rotating the knife blade cylinder 13 so that its knife blade 10 is aligned with a further mark. When the splicing operation is required a clutch 28 is actuated and the motor started to rotate the knife blade cylinder 13 and web roll A in synchronism with each other to bring them up to the peripheral speed of the web 7 under control of pick-ups, one of which 35 is shown, whereupon a cylinder 17 is actuated so that its piston 18 trips a pair of arms 15 mounted on the support 3. Tripping of the arms 15 disposes the stationary blade 11 in the rotary path of the blade 10 and the expiring web 7 is severed. The severed trailing end is attached to the tape 8 by a roller 19 tripped in timed relationship by a further piston 23. A further tape 42 carried by a suction roller 36 is attached to the opposite face of the spliced webs by a further applicator roller 38 tripped by a cylinder 40 and cooperating with a presser roller 41. The motor 4 is then stopped, the clutch 28 disengaged, the brake 30 applied to sprocket 26 to brake the mandrel 6 of the web roll B and the latter is brought into the position occupied by the web roll A by rotation of the support 3 clockwise using a motor drive 51. The guide rollers 20, 9, are then replaced by the diametrally disposed guide rollers 20a, 9a.
