Abstract
1,228,856. Labelling machines. NEW JERSEY MACHINE CORP. 28 May, 1968 [2 June, 1967], No. 25450/68. Heading B8F. An apparatus for labelling articles comprises means 10, for feeding a series of articles along a path towards and past a labelling station 30, means 22, 29, 21 for feeding a web of labels 15 from a roll 14 to the labelling station, means 35, 36 for pressing successive portions 17, 17<SP>1</SP> of the web into adhesive contact with successive articles 11 as they move past the labelling station and means 41, 42 situated at a second station 40 in advance of the labelling station for successively exerting on the applied terminal label 17<SP>1</SP> a force capable of separating the label 17<SP>1</SP> from the gripped adjacent label 17 so that the latter successively becomes the applied terminal label. The articles to be labelled are spaced by a feed screw 12 on a conveyer 10 driven at a constant velocity and are fed thereby to the labelling station. The label web 15 which is supplied from a roll 14 and partially perforated by a cutter 22, is fed to the labelling station by a metering roll 21 provided with sprocket pins 20 engaging in sprocket holes longitudinally spaced at one side of the web. Adhesive is applied to the web at 31 and the web is fed into contact with the articles by the roller 35 cooperating with the roller 36 (the sprocket hole strip being trimmed off at 32 and wound on a roll 34). The article 11<SP>1</SP> with the first label applied then moves, without rotation, to the station 40, where two oppositely rotating rollers 41, 42 twist the article 11<SP>1</SP> and its applied label 17<SP>1</SP> anticlockwise synchronously as the next article and its label 17 are gripped between rollers 35, 36 during label application, thus causing the label strip to be severed between the stations 30 and 40, along the preformed perforations. The label is then smoothed on to the article by oppositely rotating endless pelts 43, 44. In a second embodiment the roller 36 may be replaced by an extension of the feed screw 12 (Fig. 3, not shown). In a further embodiment rollers 41 and 42 may be replaced by an extension of the endless belt 44 co-operating with a pressure pad in place of the band 43 (Fig. 4, not shown). In an alternative arrangement the wheels 41, 42 of Fig. 1, may be replaced by star wheels (45, 46, Fig. 5) which grip the article 11<SP>1</SP> with its applied label 17<SP>1</SP> and propel it forward, thus severing the web. The label gumming means 31 may comprise means for activating a thermoplastic coating previously applied to the label web.
