[Also in Division D1] A machine for folding and seaming a web 15 includes an element e.g. a roller 12 over which the web passes to change the direction of travel, means for folding the web and lapping the opposite longitudinal edges 46, 48 of the web over one another with a predetermined overlap, an applicator for applying a coating 21 of adhesive to the web along a portion thereof that contacts with a surface along the other edge portion of the web after the web is folded, a holder 25 for the applicator movable in a direction parallel to the plane of the web at the region of the applicator, means urging the applicator holder toward the edge of the web, and an abutment extending from the applicator holder and into contact with an edge of the web when the applicator is in position to apply the coating of adhesive at a constant distance from the edge of the web. As shown, adhesive 21 is applied to the web from a nozzle 23 supplied by a pump 42 and clamped between elements 31, 32 held in adjusted position by a screw 38 ; the latter may be left slightly loose so that the element can rock or oscillate to accommodate any rise and fall of the level of the paper web 15. The applicator holder 25 slides freely along guides 58 but it urged in one direction by a weight 60 attached by a cord 62, passing over a pulley 64, to the holder, the weight then keeping a channel-shaped abutment 72 in contact with the edge of the web; alternatively, the weight is replaced by a spring. The pulley 64 rotates on an axle 76, carried by a stud 82 and which can be orientated by loosening a nut 90 to a horizontal position regardless of what the upward or downward slope of the web may be. By means of a bracket 100 to which the applicator is attached the latter is adjustable transversely of the direction of the travel of the web.
