Abstract

1,021,353. Web coating apparatus. BELOIT CORPORATION. Sept. 29,1964 [Oct.10, 1963], No. 39595/64. Heading D1L. Travelling web coating mechanism comprises a curved downwardly-facing backing surface for supporting the travelling web, means for applying coating to the surface of the web, a doctor blade which is held against the coated surface of the web following the coating applying means and is located on the uprunning side of the web, and means acting to retain a pool of coating against the web in advance of the blade. In the arrangement shown rotary backing roller 10 supports travelling web W and is driven by means 10a. Coating is applied to the web by applicator roller 11 driven by means 11a and partly immersed in coating pan 12. The coated surface is engaged by a trailing doctor blade 14, and a pool 16 of coatirg is maintained in advance of blade 14 by a flexible strip or cup 15 formed of a resilient springy material, the excess coating flowing over edge 20 or out at each end. The strip 15 is preferably secured to the base of blade 14 and held between clamping members 17 and 18. The pool 16 is formed by coating material from the web and causes higher hydraulic pressures between blade 14 and the web W. In a second embodiment a non-resilient member is adjustably fixed ahead of the blade 14 so as to permit a pool of coating to form between it and the blade.
