Abstract

1,241,821. Web coating apparatus. AMCHEM PRODUCTS Inc. 2 July, 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 31524/68. Heading D1L. [Also in Division B2] An applicator for applying a liquid coating to moving surfaces, e.g. moving metal strips, comprises a brush portion 15 having a plurality of brush filaments 22 arranged in a generally rectangular pack and terminating in a straight edge 24, and a reservoir portion 16 located above the brush portion 15 and having a slotlike capillary feed passage 38 of uniform thickness leading from the reservoir to communicate with the side of the pack of filaments across the whole width thereof. The brush 15 is fixed to a triangular base piece 25 pivotally mounted on vertically adjustable legs 28. An adjacent side 36 of base 25 cooperates with a member 29 having a recessed portion 33 of a surface downwardly sloping towards base 25 to form reservoir 16. The capillary slot width is determined by the degree to which members 29 are tightened against resilient spacers 41 located between members 29 and base 25. A reservoir extension piece 18 is mounted above reservoir 16 and is fed with coating material from a source not shown. The applicator is mounted above the metal strip and the angle subtended by the brush to the metal surface is varied from 10‹ to 80‹, but is preferably used at 45‹ by adjustment of legs 28. The capillary feed passage may be up to 1/16" in width but is preferably 1/100 in.
