Abstract

1431216 Coating apparatus ESCHER WYSS GmbH 13 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 28180/73 Heading B2L [Also in Division D1] A coating applicator comprises an elongate blade 1 having a chamber 4a facing a counter surface 5 and means for moving the blade towards and away from the surface 5 under a biasing force at least when the applicator is in operation. As shown in Fig. 4 the blade 1 is moved towards the surface by coating medium entering a channel 10a into a chamber 11a while coating medium passes through a passageway 6a with a variable restrictor 3a to the chamber 4a where it applies the medium to the web 12. A dividing member 16 separates chamber 4a from a second chamber 4b and coating medium from a passageway 10c urges the member 16 against counter surface 5. The chamber 4b may apply a second coating or collect excess material from the previous coating operation on the web 12. In Fig. 5 coating material enters chamber 4a from an inlet 14 and excess passes out through a variably restricted passageway 6a. The blade is resiliently urged towards the roller 5 by a spring 92 and a doctor blade 101 is provided. The blade is capable of slight rotational movement in its mounting 9. Fig. 6 shows an apparatus wherein both sides of a web 12 can be simultaneously coated the apparatus details being similar to those of Figs. 5 and 4 except that more coating chambers are provided. The apparatus may be in the form described to coat a web or the counter surface 5 may be that of a roller to be coated or that in turn may be a transfer or applicator roller which carries out a subsequent coating operation.
