Abstract

1349173 Web coating apparatus ILFORD Ltd 12 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36167/71 Heading D1L A doctor blade assembly for use in metering the amount of coating liquid applied to a travelling web by a rotating transfer roller 2 (Fig. 2) which has a plurality of peripheral rings 20-23 formed on its surface comprises an array of rigid doctor blades 24 to 27 each formed with a narrow slot in its operative end which fits closely over its adjacent peripheral ring, the whole doctor blade assembly being mounted on a block 33 (Fig. 3) which is secured to the coating apparatus via bracket 34 to pivot about pivot point 35 towards and away from the surface of the roller and each blade 31 being mounted on the block 33 on a spring steel flexing member 32 which may be moved independently towards and away from the roller surface via screw threaded member 36 and stud 37. As illustrated in Fig. 2 the outermost blades 24 and 27 of the array carry projections 29 and 30 respectively for preventing build-up of coating liquid on the sides of the roller 2. The roller 2 may be rotated in a trough of coating liquid in a direction contra to the direction of web travel and at a slightly higher surface speed than that of the web (Fig. 1, not shown).
