Abstract
1345617 Web coating apparatus ILFORD Ltd 12 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36166/71 Heading D1L Apparatus for coating a web 1 comprises a contra-rotating transfer roller 2 rotating, preferably at a surface speed higher than the forward speed of the web, in a coating trough 4, the web 1 being guided in contact with the roller 2 by two flanged rollers 8 and 9 linked together by a rod 10 and axially movable together in relation to the axis of fixed transfer roller to adjust the position of the web 1 as it contacts the roller 2. The flanges on each roller 8, 9 are set apart at a distance just sufficient to accommodate the width of web to be coated. Roller 8 is preferably arranged to be pivoted in the direction indicated about the axis of roller 9 to assist in feeding web at the start of the coating operation. The apparatus may be used for coating stripes of magnetic coating material 5 onto the surface of a transparent web 1 when roller 2 is provided with a plurality of peripheral rings, doctor blade 6 is arranged to doctor the amount of material applied to the web from each of the rings, and an inspection device is located downstream of the coating apparatus. The inspection device comprises a microscope 13 arranged to view light passing through the transparent web 1 from source 12 and light passing through glass plate 15 from source 16. Glass plate 15 bears graticule lines indicating the desired pattern and separation of stripes coated on the web and a comparison of these with the actual coated stripes enables the correct adjustment of the axial position of rollers 8 and 9 to be made.
