656,674. Photographic developing apparatus. GRINTEN, L. P. F. VAN DER, GRINTEN, P. A. W. VAN DER, and GRINTEN, K. J. J. VAN DER, (trading as CHEMISCHE FABRIEK L. VAN DER GRINTEN). Oct. 6, 1948, No. 26101. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1947. [Class 98 (ii)] Apparatus for the semi-wet development of photographic prints comprises a rotary feed roller, the surface of which is provided with capillary channels extending transversely to the roller axis, the channels being at such a small distance from each other than a substantially uniform delivery of a laterally continuous film of liquid is obtained, and an intermediate liquid-transfer roller or rollers for supplying liquid from a source of supply to the feed roller, a doctor blade being provided for co-operating with the intermediate roller or rollers for limiting the quantity of liquid transmitted to the feed roller. As shown, developer is applied to the strip 3 by a roller 1 consisting of a metal core coated with a synthetic material in which are provided helical grooves. The roller 7 dipping into the developer 10 and transferring developer to the roller 1 is engaged by a doctor blade 13 provided with recesses. The roller 7 may itself have helical grooves, and in this case the doctor blade may be smooth. In a modification, the blade 13 is replaced by a doctor roller, and one or both of the roller 7 and the doctor roller are grooved or pitted. The doctor roller may dip into the developer and transfer developer to a roller 7 not dipping into the developer, or both rollers may dip into the developer. As shown in Fig. 5, both sides of the film 3 are developed by use of a duplicate system of rollers. A series of rollers may be provided between the feed rollers 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and the developer baths 10, 101. The rollers may be of stainless steel, rubber, synthetic material, or glass. The apparatus may be combined with a contact-printing apparatus of the kind in which tracings and a continuous band of lightsensitive paper are passed over an internally illuminated glass cylinder, the speed of rotation of the cylinder being varied to vary the exposure.
