Abstract

1,058,633. Wrapping-machines. TAPE ENGINEERING Ltd. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 1, 1962], No. 29544/62. Heading B8C. A machine for enclosing a roll in wrapping material includes a gauging device for measuring the diameter of the roll, a wrapping well with relatively movable parallel side walls to suit the diameter of the roll, means for feeding the roll from the gauging device into the well, means for causing the wrapping material to extend across the feed path, so that the roll will carry the wrapping material into the well closely wrapping it round the lower portion of the roll and means for completing the wrapping of the package. In one embodiment the roll is fed down an inclined ramp BB<SP>1</SP>, the lower part B being movable and is arrested in a gauging position on the fixed upper part B<SP>1</SP> by a stop lever B<SP>2</SP> pivoted on the ramp B<SP>1</SP>. The gauging device consists of a sensing plate D movable at rightangles to the ramp so as to engage the roll and measure its diameter, thus actuating a device D<SP>2</SP> which controls the setting of various parts of the machine. The wrapping well has side walls C, E one of which lies beneath and is movable with the lower edge of the ramp and the other lies beneath and is movable with a guide bracket E<SP>1</SP>. The two walls make equal and opposite horizontal movements controlled by the device D<SP>2</SP> so that their distance apart is substantially equal to the diameter of the roll, the walls C, E having flanges C<SP>2</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> to serve as guides for the wrapping material. The wrapping material is fed over the well CE by a horizontally movable carriage G having driven rollers H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>2</SP> and a guide H<SP>6</SP> mounted thereon, the end of the guide being adjacent to a cutting device G<SP>5</SP>. When the gauging device has set the parts of the machine the rollers H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>2</SP> are unlocked and the web H is fed across the well, one or more plungers F<SP>3</SP> preventing the web from going into the well. The amount of web fed forward is controlled by a rack H<SP>7</SP>. When the piece of wrapping material is in position across the top of the well, the stop lever B<SP>2</SP> is released and the plungers F<SP>3</SP> are lowered to allow the roll to fall into the well carrying the wrapping material with it. The roll is received by a conveyer J which moves the roll lengthwise, the upper loose ends of the wrapper coming into contact with wire guides J<SP>3</SP>, J<SP>4</SP>, Fig. 2 (not shown), which fold the ends of the wrapper over each other, adhesive tape being applied to seal the overlapping edges. In an alternative embodiment the wrapping machine is as described in Specification 1,058,632. This construction may be modified by the addition of means to move the well walls to grip the roll and web when in the wrapping position (Fig. 6, not shown).
