Abstract

1310859 Guiding webs ROCKFORD SERVO CORP 3 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 10107/72 Heading B8R Apparatus for laterally guiding a longitudinally travelling web along a pre-determined path comprises : a frame 23 tiltable about an effective pivot centre P and mounting a guide roller 15 on a stationary support 22; a sensor 16, e.g. of the pneumatic, photo-electric or feeler type, for detecting lateral deviations in the path of the web, the sensor being carried by a follower 32 slidable along a guideway 31 mounted on the support 22; an activator (17, 18), Fig. 2 (not shown), for moving the frame 23 to correct for sensed deviations; and a linkage 45 pivotally connected at one end to the follower 32 and at the other end to the frame 23 at a point laterally offset from the centre P. The arrangement is such that the sensor 16 is maintained at a uniform spacing laterally of the longitudinal path of travel of the web, as it leaves the roller 15, to thereby accommodate fluctuations of the web in a direction perpendicular to its plane caused by tilting of the frame 23. A modified mounting arrangement for the sensor 16, allowing adjustment for webs of different widths, is described with reference to Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown).
