Abstract

1491444 Packaging in tubular material C H BANKS 29 Jan 1975 [31 Oct 1973] 50656/73 Heading B8C An apparatus for sealing tubular packaging material 1 containing a predetermined number of articles 3 received from a delivery tube outlet 6 comprises pivotal elements 20, 21, 40 for gathering and introducing a portion of the material 1 which extends between the outlet 6 and the articles 3, into an aperture 17 of a sealing head 15, a tensioning device 49 adapted to engage the material 1 between the outlet 6 and the sealing head 15 and to displace the engaged packaging material in a direction away from the aperture 17 so as to draw the material through the aperture, and sealing and severing means in the sealing head 15 for applying two spaced seals to the gathered material portion and severing this portion between the seals. The packaging material, e.g. netting, fabric or sheet plastics material, is stored on the delivery tube 2 in concertina fashion and retained by friction. A brush-like element (not shown) mounted over the delivery tube 2 and engaging the packaging material, and/or a roller 80 positioned adjacent the delivery tube outlet 6 may be provided to resist withdrawal of the packaging material 1. The tensioning device 49 which comprises a roller 61 mounted along one side of a vibrating tray 60 for supporting the articles supplied from the delivery tube 2, acts to draw the articles against the bottom of the sealing head 15 and then to draw a length of packaging material for the next batch of articles from the delivery tube 2. The gathering elements 20, 21 are pivoted on either side of the sealing head 15 and each comprise upper and lower arms 20a, 20b, 21a, (21b) (not shown) which are movable above and below the sealing head, respectively. The gathering element 40 comprises a fork having upper and lower arms 41, 42 which engage the packaging material compressed by the elements 20, 21 and pull it into the aperture 17. The aperture entrance is bevelled and the sealing head carries guides (75, 76), Fig. 6 (not shown), for guiding the material into the aperture 17. The sealing may be effected by applying metal clips, tying or heat-sealing. The operation of the apparatus may be controlled by sensors responsive to the positions of the packaging material or the finished packages, and a part of the machine.
