Abstract

1,212,093. Coin packaging. MILLIKEN INDUSTRIALS CORP. 31 May, 1968 [2 June, 1967], No. 26315/68. Heading B8C. A machine for packaging coins comprises a coin counter 18, Fig. 3, which supplies coins to a tube 24 formed from a web 10 of heat-shrinkable thermoplastic material, means 87 for heat sealing the longitudinal edge of said tube, jaws 26 which heat-seal the bottom of the tube, descend with the tube after a predetermined number of coins have accumulated therein, open, and ascend to seal the top of the tube, means operably associated with the jaws 26 to sever the tube of coins from the web, and means for heat-shrinking the sealed tube. The coin counter 18 supplies coins singly by means of an endless belt 40 to a shoot 20. The coins are counted again as they fall past a photo-cell and lamp 36, 38 and are collected in a tube 22 upon a separate pallet 54, both of which are movable independently about an axis 50, the tube 22 being supported by an arm 52. If the photo-cell registers an incorrect number of coins in the group, a solenoid (70), Fig. 7 (not shown), is activated to move the tube 22 over a container (not shown) to deposit the coins therein, to be returned to the counter 18. If the group is of the correct number a solenoid 72 is activated to withdraw the pallet 54 and deposit the coins in the web tube 24. The web tube is formed on rings 82, 84, and around a metal tube 25. The piston-operated heat-sealing jaws 26 are mounted on a carriage 86 fixed to collars 88 vertically slidable upon fixed guides 90. The carriage 86 is reciprocated by rods 94 connected to synchronously driven cams 92. Websevering means are located inside one of the jaws 26. Coin packages 28 drop on to a conveyer 30 driven continuously or intermittently past a preferably electric fan heater (32), Fig. 4 (not shown). The web is preferably of transparent or translucent Polypropolin, Regnolon, " Cry-OVac " (Registered Trade Mark), or " S.T. Vitafilm " (Registered Trade Mark), and may receive printing. The package formed comprises two transverse end seals (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), preferably shorter when shrunk than the diameter of the coins, joined at their ends or centres by a longitudinal seal (16). This package is the subject of Specification 1,211,426.
