Abstract

1478763 Securing tail portion of web rolls CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP 23 April 1975 [3 June 1974] 16854/75 Heading B8R The free tail portion of a web roll is folded under and secured, by adhesive, to the underlying convolution of the roll. A fully wound roll 24, conveyed by an endless belt 14, is pushed sidewards on to support rollers 26, 28 by pusher rod 50, after having actuated a sensing arm 190 which starts rotation of said rollers. An air current from nozzles 54 causes the tail portion to be partially unwound from the rotating roll, the tail portion coming to rest on a platform 124, 126 and, in so doing, obscuring two photoelectric cells 70, 120. As the tail portion starts to be rewound on to the roll, photoelectric cell 70 is first exposed causing an applicator 32 to discharge spots of hot-metal adhesive 116 on to the underlying convolution. Cell 120 is exposed next, causing a plurality of laterally spaced blades on an L-shaped support 182 to pivot upwardly through apertures 76 in the platform thereby turning the tail portion end upon itself and holding it against the platform. As rewinding continues, the doubled over tail portion is pulled past the blades which form a fold. The folded portion then abuts the adhesive on the underlying convolution and is thereby secured to the roll. In an alternative embodiment, the adhesive is applied to the folded portion.
