Class 94(1) Sheets of wrapping paper 53 are applied to rolls of newsprint 50 by an apparatus comprising a pair of heated slidable heads 5, which are moved by thrustors 12 and are interconnected for synchronised movement by endless chains 16 ; rotatable rollers 1 on which the rolls rest; plough shaped members 21 which are mounted on and are extensible relative to the heads 5 ; and suction devices 11 for retaining adhesive discs on the heads. In operation the roll 50 is lifted onto the rollers 1 and is centred thereon by moving the heads 5 inwardly, the heads are then moved away from the roll ends. A portion of the roll is next unwound, the wrapper 53 and adhesive strips 54, 55 are inserted in the unwound portion of the roll and the rollers 1 are rotated to wind the wrapper around the roll to a position in which its adhesive portion 57 sticks to the outside of the wrapper, and the strips 54, 55 extend externally about the roll. At this point the plough shaped members 21 are moved inwardly by thrustors 12 and 23 so that they crimp the overhanging margins of the paper 53 at 56 as the roll is further rotated. The heads 5 are again retracted and the members 21 are withdrawn relative to the heads, the adhesive discs (not shown) are attached to the heads which are then pressed against the crimped portions of the wrapper to complete the package. Finally a jack 43 is operated to lift the roll off the rollers 1.
