Abstract

A pusher (15) moves a pile of journals (1) onto an endless roller conveyor (2) and a frame (10) descends. An arm (18) of a retractable support (9) is moved away from conveyor (2) by a cam (22). A gripper takes wrapping paper (5) from a roll (12) over the pile (1), passing it between a fixed support (8) and the conveyor (2) and so that the end (4) comes onto the conveyor. A mechanism (3) enters the end (4) between adjacent rollers of the conveyor (2) and an arm (18) lifts under the front edge of the pile forming a fold of paper below it. The conveyor (2) is advanced causing end (4) to be introduced under the pile. A cutter (13) severs the front end of the paper and this is also folded under he pile os all damage to the bottom of the pile is avoided.
