Abstract
1355446 Wrapping machines C R STEVENS 8 Feb 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 5855/72 Heading B8C In a wrapping machine, a wrapper 48 is fed beneath a conveyed stack of paper sheets, leading and trailing portions 50, 49 of the wrapper are folded on to the top of the stack and sealed together, and the end-portions of the now tubular wrapper are folded and sealed at a station 21. An operator places the stack on a table 11 to actuate a switch (LS1, Fig. 3) to raise rollers 29 and lower stops 33 so as to carry the stack to a first conveyer 13. The stack strikes a switch (LS2) to actuate a roller 38 for feeding a wrapping web 25 upwardly through a gap between the first conveyer 13 and a second conveyer 15. This web-feeding elevates a dancer roller 48 to cause a drive to unwind more web from a supply 12. As the stack moves on to the second conveyer 15, belts 51 carried by a pivotal arm 56 engage the top of the stack, and the leading margin 50 of the web is deflected upwardly by fingers 61 so as to be folded back by guides 62 to lie on supports 65. The stack than strikes a switch (LS4) to stop the second conveyer 15 and energize a cutter assembly 14 comprising a rotary cutter and a glue applicator 47 carried by a carriage 45 movable along a transverse guide 44. This cutter serves the wrapper 48 from the web 25 and applies a strip of glue to the trailing wrapper margin 49, and the second conveyer 15 and the belts 51 are re-energized to feed the stack on to a third conveyer 66. The stack then engages a switch (LS9) to stop the conveyer 66 and lower an elevator 18 supporting the conveyer 66. Downward movement of the elevator actuates a switch (LS10) to pivot a pair of wings 82, 83 to fold the wrapper over the front and rear faces of the stack. A sweep arm 91 then pivots to fold the leading wrapper-margin on to the stack-top, and a second sweep arm 92 sweeps the trailing margin from catches 110 and places it over the leading margin. The wings 82, 83 are then outwardly pivoted and the elevator 18 is raised to reenergize the conveyer 66, which transfers the partially wrapped stack on to a fourth conveyer 19 for transfer to a paddle conveyer 20 having paddles 126 carried by belts 121. The paddle conveyer 20 moves the stack between stationary and pivotal tuckers 131, 132, folding ploughs (136, Fig. 3), glue applicators 138 and folding ploughs 139 which close the wrapper over the stack.
