Abstract

877,113. Marking cables. MILFORDASTOR Ltd. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 29, 1958], No. 41806/58. Class 100(2) Apparatus for marking cables. comprises a roller, driven by the passage of the cable, which rotates a cylinder having heated dies thereon and an automatically changing number-printing mechanism adapted to print a legend and the length on to the cable from a transfer foil fed through the apparatus between the heated dies and the cable. As shown, the cable A is fed between rollers 3, 5 and the marking cylinder 11 and a roller 14, and is subsequently wound on a drum or reel. The cables drives the rollers 3, 5, and the roller 5 drives the cylinder 11 through a belt 12. The lower rollers 3, 14 are carried on levers which are urged upwardly by rubber buffers 4b, 15b, respectively, on other levers which are engaged by cams 6, 17. The cam 6 is shown as settable by a handle 8 and lockable by a handle 8, and the cam 17 is urged by a weight 19, but the same system can be used in both positions. The marking cylinder 11 has four electrically heated dies 13, one of which comprises an automatically changing number-printing mechanism 13b. The latter is operated, as the cylinder rotates, by fixed cams which engage a roller on a slide incorporated in the mechanism 13b, and the arrangement is such that the mechanism 13b marks the cable length passed through the apparatus, and the other dies mark the maker's name, type of cable &c. The cable is guided over adjustable flanged rollers 34. Marking foil B is drawn from a spool 22, over guide rollers 23, through a shoot and guide 24 into contact with the cable A, around a roller 27 and further guide rollers 23a to a rewind spool 25 which is driven by a belt 26 from the marking cylinder 11 through a clutch means which accommodates the change in diameter of the spool 25 as the foil accumulates thereon. The roller 27 is actuated to press the foil on to the cable A during the number-printing operation: this roller is carried by a lever 28 having a runner which is engaged by a cam 31 on the cylinder 11.
