Abstract

1359476 Splicing webs JAMES HALLEY & SONS Ltd 10 Dec 1971 [12 Dec 1970] Divided out of 1359475 Heading B8R In a web winding stand, apparatus for attaching a running web 10 to a new core 30 on completion of a fully wound roll 13 comprises a cutter mechanism positionable by a ram 18 and including a knife 15 actuable by a ram 17, and a riding roller 20 which can be brought into engagement with the new core 30. The roller 20 is mounted on pivoted arms 19 held in a ready position by means of a latch plate 23 movable by a ram 25 to effect a quick release of the arms, which are under resilient pressure exerted by a ram 21. The rams 18, 17 and 25 are actuated in timed relationship to effect the splicing operation, and the high speed actuation of the riding roller 20 ensures that the initial turns of the web are formed tightly and evenly on the core 30. A similar quick-release mechanism may be provided for the splicing apparatus of an unwind stand of the type described in Specification 1,359,475, and this embodiment is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown).
