My invention relates to a web roll changing system and more particularly to one used with printing presses and especially to a web roll changing system to be used in connection with the modern one-story high speed presses, in which the presses are arranged in units on the printing floor and the web roll changing system is carried on the floor below.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a web roll changing system in which the expending roll may be delivered from the press and its supports returned to normal feeding position by one mechanism and the new roll supplied to the said supports when so relieved, by another mechanism which raises the new roll into position occupying a roll transferring relation to the mechanism delivering the expending roll, the two 0 erations being in part simultaneous, if (esired.
Another object of my invention is to provide a web roll changing system which will Save time in discharging the old rolls and in supplying the new rolls and which will also economize floor space, particularly the space between adjacent roll stands when used in connection with the one-story press, where it is very desirable to utilize web roll changing mechanism of less overall length than the distance between centers of press and move outwardly when supplying the new roll. This enables one to provide a web roll changing mechanism within less floor space than is occupied between centers of the corresponding printing press units above it, there being thus a web roll changing mechanism for each unit and ready ac: cess by the p'ressman to each web roll changing device being also permitted.
Another object of my invention is to provide means under the control of-the pressman for bodily shifting the pulleys of. the
friction driving belt, which cooperates with and gives the braking action to the web roll, thus enabling the belt to be entirely removed from engagement with the web roll when desired or to be brought into contact therewith and positioned at various angles, controlled by the ressman, so as to vary the braking effect as the roll decreases in size.
Another object of the invention is to provide margin regulating mechanism cooperating with both the new roll and the expending roll in the web roll changing mechanism.
\Yith the above and other objects in view my nvention consists in the parts, improvements and combinations more fully pointed out hereinafter.
Referring now to the drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the new roll in its supplying arms and the expending roll about to be lowered.
Figure 2 is a transverse section looking down on the parts shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation with the expending roll in partly lowered position and electrical connections for operating the motors for actuating the web roll changing mechanism and for shifting the friction belt. Figure 9 is a diagrammatic View illustrating the construction and arrangement of the web roll changing system in connection with a modern one-story high speed press, the press units being arranged on the printing floor and the corresponding web roll changing devices being placed on the floor below.
In the drawings 1 indicates the frame of the web roll changing device on which is mounted the means for supporting the expending roll and for moving its supports to the delivery position and returning them to normal feeding position where they re-- ceive and support the new roll. hese means may be varied. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the supports 2 which hold the expending roll A are raised and lowered out of and into normal feeding position. This is done by screws 3, 4. These screws are arranged vertically thereby permitting the lowering of the supports into the delivery position for delivering the expended roll and their return to normal feedmg position without the roll. Means are provided for securing simultaneous revolution of the screws, thebevel gears 5 attached to the screws and the counter-shaft 6 pro vided with bevel gears 7, the two sets of gears intermeshing producing this result.
In the best embodiment of the invention, the screws are driven by power, as for example by an electric motor 8, which'may be mounted on a support 9 above the web roll. The motor 8 is provided with a train of reduction gearing 10, the last gear 11 of which is carried on a shaft 12, which in turn carrice a worm 13 meshing with worm wheel 14, carried by an extension 15 of one of the screws. By reversing the direction of rotation of the motor, the elevating screws are enabled to raise or lower the roll supports.
The expending roll or main supports are thus moved in a vertical path and auxiliary means are provided for moving the new roll into the return end portion of the path, thus permitting the transfer of the new roll to the supports for the expended roll when the latter have reached about the end of their return'travel. These means may be varied. In the best embodiment of the invention, a pair of swinging lever arms 16, 17 are provided for the new roll, in the ends of which the roll is carried. The roll is transferred to the arms ofrom the truck 18, the truck carrying the roll having been moved into place, with the roll spindle 19 above the ends of the swinging arms, and the arms raised to receive the roll spindle (see dotted line position in Figure 1). Or the roll may be taken from the floor as shown in full lines. The swinging arms are pivoted on the frame of the device adjacent to the screw 3 and extend inwardly of the press, thus making the device more compact. The exact position and number of the pivots may be varied, but in the form of the invention illustrated, each arm is separately pivoted as at 20, 21, the pivots being quite close to the screw 3. Each arm is respectively provided with a sector 22, 23, the sectors being engaged by corresponding worms 24, 25, carrying bevel wheels 26, 27 at their ends, a cross shaft 28 which carries bevel wheels 29, 30 securing simultaneous raising and lowering of the swinging arms when one of the worms 24 or 25 is driven. The combination of swinging arms transferring a roll to vertically reciprocating supports as shown, saves floor space. The worms lock the arms when the arms are raised.
Means are provided for driving the worms by power. A motor 31, by means of reduction aring 32, the last gear of the train carrying a worm which engages with worm wheel 33 on the shaft which carries worm 25,
may be used to raise or lower the swinging arms by power, by driving the motor in one direction or reversing it.
Means are provided for avoiding contact between the swinging arms carrying the new roll and the ends of the expending roll spindle, as the arms are swung upwardly into place. These means may be varied. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, as; appears clearly in Figures 2 and 4, the pivots 20 and 21 for the swinging arms extend beyond the expending roll spindle 34, the arms thus clearing the spindle of the expending roll.
The ends of the swinging arms are bent inward at 35 so that the new roll supports 36 at their ends may reach a position i1nmediately above the supports 2 of the expending roll and in roll transferring relation to said supports when the swinging arms have reached their uppermost position. Stops 37 secured to the frame 1 are provided to limit the outward movement of the roll spindle carried by the swinging arms 16, 17, thus positioning the roll spindle. By raising the supports 2 still further (these now having returned empty), the supports 2 engage the ends of the spindle 19, see Figure 7, and the arms 16, 17, may be swung back empty to receive another roll, the supports 2 now carrying the new roll in normal feeding position. In the form of the invention illustrated, the expending roll supports are lowered and returned along a chord of an are, one half of which is described by the path of the new roll.
Means are provided under the control of the pressman for bodily moving the tension belt so as to vary the angle of contact and its braking efi'ect and so as to permit entire removal of the belt from contact with the roll. This enables the pressman to apply whatever braking tension he pleases to the roll by shifting the belt. This becomes desirable for example when a partially expended roll starts to flood the press, i. c. to feed too rapidly. The tension may then be rapidly increased by the pressman by shifting the belt. He is not hampered by the too little or too great pressure on the roll due to the inherent tension of a belt swinging from a fixed pivot. The belt member in the form shown consists of two belts 38, 39, passing respectively around pulleys 40, 41, 42, 43, carried by frames 44, 45. The inner pulleys 40, 42 are mounted on a shaft 46 driven by power from the press, the speed of the belt being lower than that of the web, by shaft 48 and meshing bevel gears 49, 50 mounted in sliding boxes 51. The shaft 48 is slidingly keyed to gear 50 so as to rotate it wherever the shaft 46 may be. The sliding boxes 51 are adjustable in and out by screws 52 which engage the boxes and which are turned by bevel gears 53 and tion shown'in Figure 1, where it cooperates with the expending roll, when the latter has reached a small diameter the angle of thebelt being now such as to weigh least heavily on the expending roll, thus giving the least braking effect. Or the belt may be moved into the aosition shown in Figure 3. the angle of the belt causing it to weigh more heavily on the expending roll and give greater braking efi'ect. Or the belt may be moved into the position shown in FigureG entirely away from the new roll, permitting the stopping of the press and doing away with the driving action of the belt upon the new roll.
If either device for moving a roll, the screws or the swinging arms, breaks down, the other device may be used temporarily, the tension belt being always ready to cooperate with either device. The swinging belt is thus always ready to apply tension to the roll carried by the swinging arms when they have been raised to position the roll. or to apply tension to a roll in the screw supports when the screws have raised these latter supports to feeding position.
In order to unite the webs and to continue the paper feed to the press, the press is first stopped by stopping the motor which drives it After the press has been stopped the front edge a of the new roll may be pasted to .the expiring web, by tucking the front edge a in between the two rolls as at b (the expending roll support-s having been lowered into the position shown in Figure 6). The press may now be started when the expiring web will draw the new web thru the press. The expiring web may now be severed from its spindle which is then removed.
The tension belts are now adjusted to act on the new web roll and the expending roll supports are raised totake the spindle and new roll and allow the swinging arms to be lowered for the next new roll.
Means are provided for regulating the margin of the web running to the press, both when it is running from the expending roll and also when itis running from the new roll. I provide the supports for the expending roll with margin-regulating devices and also position margin-regulating devices on the fixed frame of the machine, so that when the new roll is brought into position, it will automatically find its margin regulating device. A grooved collar 54 is secured to the roll spindle 34 of the expending roll and an arm 55 pivoted at 56 to one of the expending roll supports may be adjusted by screw 57 passing thru the arm 55,
thus shifting the roll spindle 34 sideways and regulating the margin.
The upper margin regulating device comprises an arm 58 whose tip end engages with the groove in collar 54 when the swinging arms have raised the new roll to its inward position. The arm 58 is pivoted so asto swing in two planes, ensuring ready engagement of the arm with the roll collar. The arm 58 is pivoted upon screw bolt 59 and may be adjusted to shift the roll spindle laterally by hand screw 60 passing thru the arm into the frame. The inner pivot of arm 58 on the screw bolt may be vertically adjusted by screw wheel 61, the pivot being pressed upwardly by spring 62. This pormits the Vertical ad ustment of the tip of p the arm 58.
By means of these two margin regulators. an adjustment of the margin may always be preserved.
Means are provided as shown diagrammatically in Figure 8, for controlling the operation of the three motors, one of which raises and lowers the new roll, another raises and lowers the supports for the expending roll, and the third for shifting the tension belt to its various angular positions. Three sets of push button switches are preferably used for controlling the motors, namely an up and down push button switch for the motor of the expending roll, and off and on switch for the tension belt motor and up and down, stop and running switches for the motor for the new roll. A top limit switch is also provided for the expending roll supports to stop this motor at the limit of the upper -movement, there being also an up limit switch for the motor tor controlling the arms carrying the new roll. An oil limit switchis also provided for stopping the tension motor when the belt has been removed from contact with the roll.
In Figure 8, the screw 3 is driven by the motor 8, the expending roll supports being indicated at 2. When the push button is pushed, current passes from the positive .main' 66, thru the main motor 8 by wire (57,
out wire 68 and returns by wire 69 and top l1m1t swltch 7 O to the negative main 71.
After the supports for the expended roll have been raised to theirtop position, an arm 72 on the supports 2, strikes the top limit switch opens it, thus breaking the 1 circuits thru the tension motor and the auxiliary motor 87 thus causing the auxiliary motor to move the new roll up into position and causing the tension motor to move the carriage and belt away from the roll. The current thru the auxiliary motor controlled by solenoid 77 passes from the positive main 66 by way of wire 80, contacts 81, 82 and from the contact disc 83, wire 84, up limit switch 85, wire 86 to motor 87 and leaves it by wire 88, thru the stop and run switch returning by wire 89 to the negative main T1. The new roll then rising on its arms 1G, 17 will, when it gets into the dotted line position (Figure 8), open the up limit switch 85, thus cutting the current from the raising motor so that the new roll remains in raised position. The new roll has thus been raised automatically and simultaneously into position by the descent of the expending roll. The expended roll continues on its downward movement as long as the operator keeps the circuit closed on down button 73.
After delivery of the expended roll, the supports for the roll may be returned by pressing up button 65. in rising they break the circuit thru the solenoid 7? at switch 76. This prevents any wrongful operation of the auxiliary 1110501 for the new roll, and prevents displacement of the new roll from its raised position. t also opens the circuit for the tension belt motor. is they reach the top supports 2 strike the top limit switch breaking the circuit thru the motor 8 by way of up push button 65. No further upward movement is, therefore, possible. Up and down push buttons 90 and 91 are used when necessary to independently move the auxiliary motor 87. The up button 90 when the up limit switch is closed, connects the auxiliary motor with plus terminal 66 by way of wires 92, up limit switch 85, wire 86, the motor 87, wire 88 and return wire 89, to the negative main. This raises the arms. The down button connects the motor to main 6G by wire 92. down button 91, wire 93, motor 87, wire 8S and return wire 89, thus reversing the current thru the motor. This lowers the arms.
The tension motor is automatically started to withdraw the belt when switch 76 is closed by the downward movement of the expending roll supports, by circuit connections running from the main 66 by wire 80, switch contacts 94, 95, lower switch disc 96 (solenoid 77 having been energized), to the tension motor, by way of the off limit switch 97 and wire 98 and then to the negative main 71 by wire 99. This rotation of the tension motor moves the belt away from the paper roll and finally opens the oft limit switch 97 stopping the motion by cutting off current from the motor. To put tension on again th on button 100 is pressed closing the circuit, from the main 66, wire 101, 102 to tension motor and wire 99 to negative main 71. The ressman can thus shift the belt to any degree of contact with the roll, thus varying the tension as desired.
The operation is as follows:
The press is shown in its running condition with the paper passing thru it, in Figure 9. The new web roll supplying arms extend inwardly of the press and economize floor space, each occupying less space than is occupied between centers of the corresponding printing press units above it. When the roll is nearly expended and just about ready to be replaced by a. new roll, the op erator after gradually slowing down the press in the. usual manner, presses the down button of the motor 8 (Figure 7), causing the supports 2 and expending roll to be lowered. By continuing to press the down button, the supports 2 in their downward movement move the switch 76, by the projecting lug 72, which energizes solenoid 71 as described above and operates the motor 8? for the arms raising the new roll. This motor does not start to operate until the enpended roll has been suficiently lowered so 'that the new roll will clear it in its swee described by its carrying arms l6, 17. The carrying arms raise the new roll and the press stops running when the arms are about half way up. hen the carrying arms have raised the new roll into substantially the same position occupied by the expending roll before it started on its downward movement, the carrying arms open the up limit switch 85, which breaks the up circuit of motor 87. This places the web roll in the right position, so that when the main supports 2 are raised by the push button 65 to the original position occupied by the expended roll, they will support the new roll taking it out of the raising arms, 16, 17.
ll hen the main supports 2, operate the switch 76 in the downward movement, the solenoid 77 also closes the circuit for the oil movement of the tension motor, removing the tension belt from the surface of the roL. This oflf movement of the tension motor continues until the off limit switch 97 is opened by the movementof the tension belt earriage 9?.
With the press stopped, the web of the new roll can now be pasted and joined to the webof the expending roll, after which the web is broken from the expended roll allowing the paper web from the new roll to be drawn thru the press.
The on push button 100, of the tension motor is new pressed until the tension belt bears properly upon the surface of the new roll. The press may now be started and run at full speed as before.
The spindle of the expended roll is removed when the supports 2 are in their lid tit":
lowest position and after the web has been severed from the core or spindle.
After the supports .2 have returned and taken the spindle and the new roll from the swinging arms 16, 17, the arms 16, 17 are lowered. This is done by pressing thedown button 9i until the arms are below the level of the spindle of the next roll. This may now be, rolled on its truck, into a convenient position above the ends of the arms 16, 17 and is then ready to be raised by them.
Having thus described the invention and its operation, it will be understood that changes may be made in carryin the invention into effect, without departing from the principle thereof.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
1. A roll changing device comprising in combination main supports for the expending roll, auxiliary supports for the new roll, means for lowering the main supports for the expending roll out of normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expended roll from the supports and for raising the main supports into normal feeding position and means for raising the new roll supports into a position adjacent to the return position of the main supports prior to such return, the new roll being thereby transferred from the auxiliary supports to the main supports.
2. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, lever arms carrying the new roll supports, means for moving said arms thereby moving the new roll supports while carrying the new roll into a normal feeding position occupying a roll transferring relation to the return position of the expended roll supports, and means for moving the supports for the expending roll out of and into said normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expended roll and the transfer of the new roll to the supports for th exended roll.
3. A rolL changing device for printing presses having a printing coupl comprising in combination supports for the expending roll. supports for the new roll, inwardly extending means extending inwardly of the printing press frame thereby supporting the new roll below the printing couple of the press, said means moving said new roll supports while carrying the new roll into a normal feeding position occupying a roll transferring relation to the return position of the expended roll supports, and means for moving the supports for the expending roll out of and into said normal feeding position, thereby permitting the discharge of-the ex pended roll and the transfer of the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
4. A rollchanging device for prmtmg presses comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, means for reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll from the supports, supports for the new roll, arms carrying the new roll supports, means for swinging said arms outwardly, thereby transferring the new roll supports into the path of the expending roll supports thereby permitting the transfer of the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
5. In a roll changing device for printing presses, means for swinging a new roll into the approximate position formerly occupied by the expending roll, supports for the expending roll and means for lowering said expending roll supports along a chord of an are one half of which is described by the path of the new roll, and thereafter returning the xpended roll supports to their original position thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
6. A roll changing device for printing presses having a printing couple comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, screws for reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll from the supports, supports for the new roll, arms carrying the new roll supports. and extending within the printing press below the printing couple, means for moving said arms outwardly, thereby moving the new roll supports into the end por- 190 tion of the pathof. the expended roll, thereby permitting the transfer of the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
7. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination, supports W for the expending roll, suports for the new roll, pivoted arms carrying the new roll supports, means for swinging said arms thereby raising and lowering the new roll supports into and out of the path of the supports for 110 the expended roll, and screws for lowering the supports for the expended roll, out of the normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the supports 115 which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
8. A roll changing device for printing 120 pressesQcomprising in combination supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, pivoted arms for raising the new roll supports, said pivoted arms being arranged to travel outside of the supports for the expending roll, and screws for lowering the supportsfor the expending roll out of the normal feeding position, thereby permltting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the said supports into normal f position, thereby transferring the new ro to the supports for the expended roll.
9. A roll changing device for printing presses, comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, pivoted arms for raising the new roll supports, said pivoted arms being bent so asto pass outside the supports for the expending roll, a pair of screws for lowering the supports for the expended roll out of the normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expended roll from the supports and for raising the supports which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
10. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination, supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, swingin arms for raising the new roll supports, sai arms being arranged laterally outside of the supports for the expending roll, and screws'for lowering the supports for the expendin roll out of the normal feeding position t ereby permitting the dlscharge of the expended roll from the supports and the raising of the supports which carried the expending roll, into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the ex nded roll, said swinging arms being pivote adjacent to the screws for raising and lowering the supports for the expending roll.
. 11. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, swinging arms for raising and lowering the new roll supports, a. motor for raising and lowering said swinging arms, and screws for lowering the supports for the expending roll out of normal feeding position, thereby permitting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the supports which carried the expending roll,
into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expending roll, and a motor for actuating said screws.
12. A roll-changing device for printing presses, comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, swinging arms for raising and lowering the new roll supports, one of said swinging arms being provided with a sector gearing engaging such sector and a motor for driving the gearing so as to raise and lower said swinging arms, and screws for lowering the supports for the expending roll out of the normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the supports-which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expending roll.
12. A belt tension mechanism for printing press rolls, comprising in combination, Web roll supports, atension belt for making contact with a roll on said supports, and means under the control of the pressman for shifting the entire belt bodily with relation to the web roll supports, so as to vary the angle of the belt when resting upon the web roll.
14. A belt tension mechanism for printing press rolls, comprising in combination, web roll supports; a tension belt, a pair of pulleys around which the belt passes, the one ulley being freely movable, and means for odily shifting the other pulley with relation to the web roll so as to vary the angle of the belt when resting upon the web roll, and thus vary the tension.
15. A belt tension mechanism for printing press rolls, comprising in combination, web roll supports, a tension belt, a pair of pulleys around which the belt passes, the outer pulley being freely movable, sliding boxes in which the inner pulley is mounted and means for adjusting said sliding boxes so as to bodily shift the inner pulley and vary the angle of the belt when resting upon the web ro 16. A belt tension mechanism for printing press rolls, comprising in combination, web roll supports, a tension belt, a pair of pulleys around which the belt passes, the outer pulley being freely movable, sliding boxes in which the inner pulley is mounted a pair of screws for adjusting said sliding boxes and a motor for driving said screws.

A belt tension mechanism for press rolls, comprising in combination, web roll supports, tension belts making contact with a roll on said supports, a pair of pulleys for each belt, the outer pulleys being freely movable, a shaft upon which the inner pulleys are mounted, and means under the control of the pressman for shifting said ighpft't bodily so as to vary the angle ofthe 18. A belt tension mechanism for printin press rolls, comprising in combination, we% roll supports, tension belts making contact Wllill' a roll on said supports, a pair of pulleys for each belt, the outer pulleys being freely movable, a shaft upon which the inner pulleys are mounted, sliding boxes carrying said shaft, a pair of screws for moving said boxes, means for driving said screws simultaneously, said means including a motor under the control of the pressman.

In a roll changing device for printing presses the combination of means for swingmg a new roll into position, independently movable means for receiving the roll from printing the swinging arms and removing the exing device for printing presses, comprising in combination, supports for the expending roll, means for reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll and the return of the supports, supports for the new roll and means for moving the new roll supports into normal feeding position at the end portion of the return path of the expended roll supports, a margin regulator for the expending roll, said regulator including means carried by a support for the expending roll for shifting said roll transversely and a margin regulator for the new roll including means for shifting the new roll laterally, said regulator carried by the fixed frame of the machine in a position adjacent to the feeding position of the new roll supports. v

A. roll changing and margin regulating device for printing presses, comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, means for reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll and the return of the supports, supports for the new roll and means for moving the new roll supports into normal feeding position at the end portion of the return path of the expended roll supports, a mar gin regulator for the expending roll, said regulator including an adjusting screw carried by a support for the expending roll for shifting said roll transversely and a margin regulator for the newroll including an adjusting screw for shifting the new roll laterally, said regulator carried by the fixed frame of the machine in a position adjacent to the feeding position of the new roll supports.
22. A roll changing and margin regulating device for printing presses, comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, means for reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll and the return of the supports, supports for the new roll and means for moving the new roll supports into normal feeding position at the end portion of the return path of the expended roll supports, and a margin regulator for the new roll including means for shifting the new roll laterally, said regulator carried by the fixed frame of the machine in a position adjacent to the feeding position of the new roll supports.

A roll changing and margin regulating device for printing presses, comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, means for reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll and the return of the supports, supports for the new roll and means for moving the new roll supports into normal feeding position at the end portion of the return path of the expended roll supports, and a margin regulator for the new roll including means for shifting the new roll laterally, said regulator carried by the frame of the roll changing device in a position adjacent to the feeding position of the new roll supports, said means comprising an arm pivoted to the frame of the device, means permitting said .arm to swing in two planes, said arm 7 bemg arranged so as to engage the new roll spindle when the new roll supports have been moved into feeding position.

In a roll supplying device for printing presses, the combination of a pair of swinging arms for the new roll, said arms extending inwardly of the press frame, means for swmging said arms into feeding position and for reversing and returning said arms to the position for receiving a new roll, and a 85 pivoted belt tension device arranged adjacent to the feeding position of the arms and cooperating with the new roll, thereby providing tension means for the new roll when swung up by the arms.

In a roll supplying device for printing presses, the combination of a pair of pivoted swinging arms for the new roll, means for swinging said arms from a horizontal supplying position to a vertical feed ing position and reversing and returning them to their horizontal position to receive a new roll, and a'pivoted belt tension device arranged adjacent to the feeding position of the arms and cooperating with the new roll, thereby providing tension means for the new roll when swung up by the arms.

In a roll discharging device for printing presses, the combination of supports for the expending roll, means for moving said m5 supports into a position for discharging the expended roll and then reversely and back into normal feeding position, and a pivoted tension belt arranged adjacent to the normal feeding position of the supports and 00- operating with the web roll thereon.

In a roll discharging device for printing presses, the combination of supports for the expending roll, screws for moving said supports into a position for discharging the expended roll and then reversely and back into normal feeding position, and a pivoted tension belt arranged adjacent to the normal feeding position of the supports and cooperating with the web roll thereon.
28. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination, supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, pivoted swinging arms carrying the new roll supports, means for swinging said arms from horizontal to Vertical position and back to horizontal position thereby raising and lowering the new roll supports into and out of the path of the supports for the expended roll, and means for lowering the supports for the expending roll out of the normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the supports which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
29. A roll changing device for printing presses, comprising in combination supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, swinging arms swinging from horizontal to vertical position and back to horizontal position for raising and lowering the new roll supports, a motor for raising and lowering said swinging arms and screws for lowering the supports for the expending roll out of normal feeding position, thereby permitting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the supports which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expending roll, and a motor for actuating said screws.

In a roll changing device for printing presses the combination of swinging arms for the new roll swinging from horizontal to vertical and back to horizontal position, mechanism independent of the new roll swinging mechanism for removing the expended roll and a belt tension device arranged to cooperate with the web roll when supported by either means.

In a roll changing device for printing presses the combination of swinging arms for a new roll, means for swingingsaid arms from horizontal to vertical position, locking them in vertical position so that the paper may be fed to the press and returning in combination supports for the expending roll. means for vertically reciprocating said supports from and to the normal feeding position thereby permitting discharge of the expended roll from the supports, supports for the new roll, within the printing press frame below the printing couple, means for moving the new roll supports into the end portion of the path of the expended roll supports and stops for limiting the outward movement of the new roll support-s, thereby permitting the transfer of the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
33. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination, supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, pivoted arms carrying the new roll supports, means for swinging said arms thereby raising and lowering the new roll supports into and out of the path of the supports for the expended roll, Stops for limiting the outward movement of said arms, and screws for lowering the supports for the expending roll out of the normal feeding position, thereby permitting the discharge of the expending roll from the supports and for raising the supports which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expended roll.
34:. A roll changing device for printing presses comprising in combination, supports for the expending roll, supports for the new roll, swinging arms for raising the new roll supports, said arms being arranged outside of the supports for the expending roll, a'
worm shaft for driving said arms, screws for lowering the supports for the expending roll out of the normal feeding position thereby permitting the discharge of the expended roll from the supports and for raising the supports which carried the expending roll into normal feeding position, thereby transferring the new roll to the supports for the expended roll, said screws for raising and lowering the expended roll supports and said worm shaft for driving the swinging arms being parallel and vertical, said swinging arms being pivoted between the screw and the worm shaft.
