Abstract

589,529. Winding wire &c. MARSHALL, SONS & CO. Ltd., and RICHARDS, S. H. March 26, 1945, No. 7545. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] In apparatus for winding wire &c., the unwinding spool 1 is associated with a disc &c., 2 of conducting material adapted to rotate with the spool and between the poles of a magnet 13 in such a way that an electric current is induced in the disc &c. to produce a drag opposing rotation of the spool and a tension on the wire &c. the disc &c. and magnet being so disposed that an increase in wire tension causes a reduction in the drag due to the magnet and vice versa. In the construction of Fig. 1, the spool 1 is carried in bearings in arms 3 supported by spring strips 7. A pointer 8 moving over a scale 9 indicates the tension of the wire as it is unwound. The magnet 13 is adjustable and a vane secured to the arms 3 moves in a trough containing oil to damp the oscillations of the arms. In the modification of Fig. 4, the spool is carried in fixed bearings, the magnet 13 on an arm 18 being moved by a spring strip 29 which contacts the unwinding wire. The arm 18 pivoted at 19 is spring-biassed at 21 and furnished with a pointer and scale 23, 24 and a dash-pot device 27, 28. Specification 581,107, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
