Abstract

873,328. Automatic control systems. FERNSEH G.m.b.H. Nov. 24, 1959 [Nov. 25, 1958; Feb. 3, 1959], No. 39819/59. Class 38 (4). Tape 1 is passed from spool 2 over rollers 9, 10, and drive-sprocket 11 to spool 12, the rollers forming the tape into loops the size of which is kept substantially constant. For this purpose, the spools are driven by repulsion motors 13, 14, having brush-gear adjusted in accordance with the positions of the rollers 9 and 10. Thus, if the loop which supports the roller 9 is shortened so that the roller moves from a central position, the motor 13 is started in a direction such as to restore the loop to its mean size and at a speed which increases as the distance of the roller from its central position increases. When the length of loop increases, the motor is caused to turn the spool in the opposite direction. The roller 9 may be carried on an arm which is slotted to engage with the end of a brush-control arm, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The brush-gear may be associated with a cam to ensure strict proportionality between deviation of the roller and speed of the spool motor, or the cam may provide stepped control of the speed. When the roller 9 drops below a lower limiting position reached in normal operation, a switch is actuated to disconnect the spool motors and the motor driving the sprocket 11. In another arrangement the loop is formed by two rollers on opposite ends of a rocking arm which is secured to a shaft coupled to the brush-gear. The rocking arm is biased in a direction to increase the length of the loop by means of a spring attached to a flexible member wrapped around a cam secured to the shaft, Fig. 4 (not shown). The shape of the cam is such as to produce constant tension in the tape over a wide range of angular movement of the shaft. To prevent hunting the spool motors are coupled to air brakes having fans which are driven at high speed from the shafts of the spool motors.
