Abstract

845,190. Tension control means. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 3, 1957 [April 28, 1956], No. 13084/56. Class 120(2). [Also in Group XXIV] Apparatus for unwinding cord, &c. in textile machinery or the like comprises a constant speed motor (not shown) driving through a shaft 3 and a variable diameter wheel 5 engaging a rubber wheel 10 to sprockets 15, 16 and a chain 17 in turn driving a feed pulley 13 over which runs a cord, &c. 14, the variable diameter wheel consisting of segments 5 on rods 4 passing radially through a cylinder 1 fast with the driving shaft 3 and biassed inwards by springs 7 to decrease the effective wheel diameter, the inner ends of the rods 4 engaging a cone-shaped cam 6 slidden axially to adjust the wheel diameter and hence the ratio of the gearing by a.jockey pulley 21 lying in a loop 20 of the cord. The rubber wheel 10 is carried on an arm 11 pivoting about the axis 12 of the feed pulley 13 and is biassed to engage the variable diameter wheel 5 by a spring 28. Guide rollers 18, 19 feed the cord 14 over the jockey pulley 21. The arrangement is such that changes in cord tension move the jockey pulley 21 and a lever 9 on which it is mounted against the bias of a spring 22 to slide the cam 6, thereby adjusting the effective wheel diameter and gear ratio in such a way as substantially to restore the tension of the cord to its original value.
