Abstract
653,085. Testing friction of driving belts. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and NORCROSS, T. May 11, 1948, No. 12851. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for measuring the resistance to slip under static load of a pulley and a driving belt in order to adjust idler rollers to ensure that a number of pulleys will run at the same speed comprises a collar 1 fitted over the pulley shaft for testing when the pulley is stationary, and locked to the shaft by means of a set screw 2. A bracket 4 having a scale 8 is rigidly attached to the collar as shown in the Figure. An annular yoke 3 is mounted on the collar by means of a ball-race 9 and drives a rod 5 the end of which is shaped as a pointer moving across the scale. A spring 6 urges the pointer toward the left-hand stop 12 and a handle 7 is provided to exert the test force. When the pulley is at rest the collar is locked to the spindle under test and the rod 5 moved over the scale by means of the handle 7 to stretch the spring 6. When the spring tension is such that the friction of the driving belt on the pulley fixed to the spindle is overcome the pulley slips against the driving belt and the bracket moves. The position of the rod on the scale at this stage indicates the load required to overcome the resistance to slip of the belt and the pulley.
