Class 80 (2) The shaft 3 of a winding machine for strip material is driven through V-belt expanding- pulley gearing, the slidable tread 8 of the output pulley being moved in accordance with the deflection of a torsion spring 12 by which a sleeve 10, carrying the spring-pressed treads 4, 5 of the input pulley, is connected to the driving shaft 2, so that the speed of shaft 3 is determined by the torque. Relative rotation between sleeve 10 and shaft 2 produces, by a pin 16 engaging a cam groove 15a, axial movement of sleeve 10 so as to bring one or other of two flanges 18, 19 into engagement with a feeler roller 20 on a shaft 22. The resulting rotation of shaft 22 produces, through gears 28, 29, clutch 32, gears 33, 34, shaft 35, gear 36 and rack 37, movement of tread 8. As the diameter of the wound roll increases during the winding operation, with consequent increase of torque, the speed of shaft 3 is thus progressively reduced. Prior to a winding operation, clutch 32 is disengaged by means of a rod 45 and the outward position of tread 8, for maximum winding speed, is set by an adjustable abutment screw 42, after which the clutch is re-engaged. The lower bearing 23 of shaft 22 is carried on one arm of a lever 21, the other arm of which is held between opposing springs 25, 26 on a pin 27. The latter may, as shown, be adjustably threaded in the casing 1, to give constant adjustable winding tension. In addition, however, the pivot 50 of lever 21 may be on an arm 75, Fig. 5, engaged by a cam member 70 rotating with shaft 35, the arrangement being such that the winding tension is reduced as the winding progresses. The member 70 is conical and adjustable axially on shaft 35 so that the reduction in tension may be varied. In a modification, with the pivot 50 fixed, the end of the pin 27 engages the member 70.
