Abstract
1,105,403. Coiling wire. S. A. PLATT. 31 Aug., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 38863/66. Heading B3E. A wire coiling machine comprises a rotary spindle, an arbor-receiving chuck on one end of the spindle to be rotationally driven thereby, a pair of coiling rolls rotationally mounted astraddle the extended axis of the chuck to straddle an arbor in the chuck, and a pair of speed reduction drive take-off means from opposite sides of the spindle to the coiling rolls, whereby the spindle is connected to drive the chuck and indirectly to drive the coiling rolls. Wire W from an oil bath 474 passes to a mandrel 64, held in a chuck 36 on a shaft 20 rotated by pulleys 16, 18. The wire W is coiled on the mandrel 64 by driven rolls 60, 62 and the resultant coil C discharging axially off the mandrel may be cut into segments by means 450. The rolls 60, 62 are driven from the shaft 20 through a sleeve 22 on the end of the shaft driving friction rolls 40, 42 which, in turn, through flexible shafts 44, 46 and timing belts 52, 54, drive the rollers 60, 62. The rollers 60, 62 are carried by hangers 150, 152 which are adjustable about pins 166, 167, to move the rollers to or from one another, by screw members 262, 260. The pins 166, 167 are mounted in arcuate sectors 154, 156 angularly adjustable by means 200 to angularly cock the rolls 60, 62 with respect to the mandrel 64. The sectors 154, 156 are in turn carried by slides 158, 160 axially moved by rack-and-pinion means driven by control knobs 322; 324 to provide individual axial adjustment of the rolls 60, 62. The coiling may be observed through a magnifying glass 420.
