A winch includes inner and outer drums 1, 2 mounted coaxially, and having on their outer surfaces helical grooves 23 of opposite hands, the outer drum having in it near one end a slot or opening 24 through which the cable can pass to be wound on the inner drum, and means 6 for rotating the inner drum to wind cable on to it while feeding it axially from an extended position extending out of the outer drum at the end of the latter where the opening is situated to a nested position in which it lies within the outer drum. As shown, the drum 1 is mounted at one end upon screw-thread 11 formed upon sleeve 10 of drum 2 and at the other end upon splines formed upon driving-shaft 5, and said sleeve 10 of drum 2 is mounted at one end upon fixed screw-thread 14 and at the other end is freely and non-drivably supported by said shaft 5. In operation, the rope passes through slot 24 on to inner drum 1 which is rotated by shaft 5 so that said inner drum slides into the outer drum till the former is fully wound. At this point stop 22 on the inner drum engages pivoted fork 21 on the outer drum to effect a release of the latter from fixed abutment 19 and to begin to drive simultaneously the two drums. The two drums then move as one to the left along fixed screwthread 14 till the rope is fully wound on the outer drum, thus completing the winding on the two drums.
