Abstract

531,265. Coiling cables &c. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. June 29, 1939, No. 18973. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1938. [Class 109] Relates to traversing arrangements for use in coiling wires or cables on drums and to the application of such devices to collecting drums interposed between a delivery apparatus and a receiving drum. The collecting or storing device shown comprises a drum 1 for receiving wire or cable from a cable-making machine &c., a delivery drum 2 delivering the cable, say, to a receiving drum, not shown, and a connecting member 3 provided with pulleys 4 over which the cable passes from drum 1 to drum 2. The drum 1 is loose on its axis and is locked in one direction by a ratchet 7. The drum 2 is driven round an axle 9 by gearing 11, 12, the axle being driven by gearing 13, 14 and friction clutches 15, 16. The clutch 15 is driven by a toothed wheel meshing with pinion 8. The clutch 16 is also driven by pinion 8 in such a way that the axle 10 tends to drive the member 3 in the opposite direction to drum 2. The coils of cable on the drums 1, 2 also embrace rollers 5, 6 which are kept inclined to the axes of the drums. The rollers 5, 6 are mounted by means of arms 17 and pivots 18, the angle of inclination being regulated by modifying the position of the arms 17. The two pulleys 4 are each mounted on a carriage driven by a right and left-hand screw, operated by a chain 20 and sprocket 19. The sprocket 19 is integral with a wheel 21 loose on the axle 10 and is driven by a wheel 22, keyed to the axle 10, there being play from differential wheels 23, 24. The operation is as follows: The cable is first wound on the drum 1 in turns the regular spacing of which is ensured by the roller 5 and then proceeds to the drum 2, via the connecting member 3. The cable leaves the machine after being wound on the drum 2 in regularly spaced turns as determined by the roller 6. The member 3 is subjected at each movement to a couple tending to make it turn in the direction of movement of the drum 1, the couple being limited by the friction of the clutch. When the member 3 turns about the common axis of the drums 1, 2 to wind or unwind the cable on or off the drums the point where the cable leaves the drum 1 or 2 to pass over the member 3 is changed and the pulleys 4 are correspondingly displaced under the action of the gearing 22 ... 24 on the right and left-hand screw. The cable is wound on the drums in equidistant coils the distance apart of which is determined by the inclination of the rollers 5, 6 to the drums.
